Visiting Costa Rica and the Volcano Irazu

Costa Rica is a little country in central America. When a lot of people hear about Costa Rica, they immediately think about the beautiful beaches, the sun and all what Mother Nature has got to offer. What about the Volcano Irazu? Yes what about it. Is it really worth visiting? Is it really dangerous to visit the Irazu volcano? How should you dress when visiting the volcano Irazu?

Costa Rica has got a few volcanoes and Irazu is one of the most visited. It is located near the famous town of Cartago. It is about 45 minutes drive from the center of San Jose the capital of Costa Rica. The great thing about visiting volcano Irazu is the view you see on your way up. As you drive from San Jose to Cartago, you will have to drive up the mountain for about 20 to 30 minutes depending on the type of car you are driving. The volcano Irazu is way up in the mountains and the drive up to the volcano Irazu offers a spectacular view of Cartago and the hills surround the area. It almost feels like a view you get from an airplane.

How much does it cost to get into the national park volcano Irazu?

If you are citizen of Costa Rica, you pay next to nothing ($2)to visit the volcano Irazu. If you are a tourist, you should expect to pay an entry fee of $10 per person. It is expensive but you have come so far to turn back.

What is there to see?

If you are visiting the volcano Irazu, there is a huge crater. Once upon a time the crater used to have a huge lake at the bottom. For some reason the lake at the volcano Irazu dried up. That is a bit of a down side because the posters have not yet been updated. If you are visiting the volcano Irazu, there is also the possibility that you will not be able to see the big crater and take pictures. Why? This is because the volcano Irazu is located at high altitudes and the weather can change pretty quick. The clouds can move in as quick as they can allow the sun to shine through. If you come with a group and you only have limited time it can be disappointing. It will take about 2 hours to visit the volcano Irazu if you take your time to enjoy the scenery and the huge field on the side of the crater.

What to wear when visiting the volcano Irazu

Because of the high altitude at which the volcano Irazu is located, it is advised to dress up warm with closed shoes(no high heels) and be ready for the cold. On a cloudy day, it can feel a little chilly. The strange thing about this is that you will feel hot at the bottom of the mountain at the entrance to Cartago. At the top of the mountain, it can feel windy and chilly. Don't visit the volcano Irazu in your bikini not unless you plan to stay in the car.

Is it dangerous to visit the volcano Irazu?

The volcano has a huge crater that is protected by wooden beams to prevent tourist from falling. If you stay within the limit, you should be fine. By the way, the volcano Irazu died a long time ago. That is to say it has been inactive for a long time. If you don't do anything crazy you should be fine.

Is it worth visiting the volcano Irazu?

The $10 price tag is a bit on the high side. However, volcano Irazu is beautiful as you can get to take breath taking pictures of the crater and the flower surrounding the crater. If you are fortunate, you will also be able to see the animals that live around the volcano Irazu. If you can visit Costa Rica, the volcano Irazu should be on your list of places to visit. Furthermore, you are about 30 minutes away from the Cathedral of Cartago and the shopping malls.

What is the best time to visit Irazu?

There is nothing like the best time to visit the volcano Irazu. If you are visiting Costa Rica in the dry season from November to March, you can visit the whole day. If you are on vacation in Costa Rica in the rainy season from March to October, you should visit the volcano Irazu in the morning. It normally rains in the afternoon.
