The first business establishment built on Fifth Avenue was a department store built by Benjamin called the B. Altman and Company. It helped to set the trend of a high class fashion district full of classy shopping venues. The trend of expensive stores continued as more affluent people moved into the area near Fifth Avenue, mostly in the area in between 59th and 96th streets.

This district has several famous apartments that were built in the 1920s by famous architects like Candela and Carpenter. Fifth Avenue is known for being one of the only main streets in the Manhattan area that didn’t have streetcars. It featured a Fifth Avenue Coach instead.

Fifth Avenue is also where some famous parades travel, such as the annual Saint Patrick’s parade and the yearly Macy’s Day Parade. Plus, there is a Puerto Rican Day Parade that runs every year on Fifth Avenue.
