Visiting the Costa Blanca
Spain is one of the European destinations where you have access to a very large diversity of outdoor pursuits. This is not only because of the great weather that anyone who visits Spain will surely get, it is also to do with the topography. Spain is very mountainous land that lends itself very well to walking and climbing. The area known as the Costa Blanca in the south eastern part of Spain has some absolutely fantastic mountains with everything that you could ask for. Many of them do not reach the dizzying heights of some of the Alpine mountains, but they have a real rugged beauty.
It's well known that many people come down to the Costa Blanca in order to lay in the sun all day on a towel draped over a deckchair on one of the white sandy beaches which are famous along this coastline of the province of Alicante, whilst sipping away and a beer with the thought of doing nothing else but walking to the nearest restaurant or bar.. There are certain towns and cities which offer an atmosphere of partying 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and 365 days a year. So, for some people, the Costa Blanca just means that rapacious atmosphere of all night parties and package holidays. But there is so much more that you can do here.
Choosing the Costa Blanca for a walking holiday may seem to some quite ridiculous, but is only the built up seaside resorts that everyone thinks of when they talk about the Costa Blanca. Cities such as Benidorm and Alicante with their high-rise buildings and large populations have only added fuel to the fire. Benidorm, for instance, only a few short years ago was a small fishing village, now the sky in a Benidorm is broken by some of the highest buildings in Spain. This city is run purely on tourism. But once you get outside the large tourist areas you will find a place with enduring beauty and ruggedness. Everywhere you go here you will encounter places and people that will surprise you.
If you come in here on a walking holiday, you can choose to stay in one of the tourist areas and "commute" to your walking destinations each day. But there is really no need to do that kind of thing nowadays. This is because the Costa Blanca Mountains are very well catered for when it comes to accommodation. You should be able to find hotels, pensions, self catering accommodation, camping sites, in fact there are so many different types of accommodation to suit a variety of budgets.
There are actually three airports which service the region. The first airport is in Valencia airport which is his in the north and is particularly good for those who want to walk in the north of the Costa Blanca. In the south, the airport at Murcia is ideal for those people coming in to the area around Torrevieja. But the most popular one of all it is situated at the heart of the Costa Blanca. Alicante airport is just a couple of minutes drive away from Elche, and is favored by many tourists and package holiday tour operators.
