Visiting the USS North Carolina

One Dad's Opinion on This Awesome Place

Last year my wife and I took our children to the Battleship North Carolina in Historic Downtown W

Battleship NC
ilmington.  We had lived in North Carolina for 5 years but somehow had never made our way to this great place.

This is an awesome battleship and it has been beatifully preserved and taken care of.  Be prepared to spend a few hours on board her, especially if you are inclined to read.  For history buffs this ship is an important part of American Naval history.  For the curious, it offers decks of interesting things to see; from bunks, to galleys, to dentistry and medical offices, radio rooms, gun turrets, the list is endless.  It is literally like stepping back in time.

Our children enjoyed themselves, though our 2 year old daughter required carrying most of the way due to how much walking and climbing needed to be done.  Caution should be taken on the many ladders and stairs as they can be slippery and are quite steep in places.

If you are claustrophobic, you may have some difficulty here, due to the close confines of many parts of the ship.  Still, there are many open areas and you should still have plenty to see and enjoy.

If you have flexibility of schedule, I would advise against going in the middle of the summer, as the lower levels are not air conditioned, and can get quite stuffy and uncomfortable.

The cost is reasonable.  At the time of this article the costs are as follows.

  • Adults 12 and over: $12
  • Seniors 65 and over: $10
  • Active Duty Military with ID: $10
  • Children 6-11: $6
  • Children 5 and under: Free

Be sure to check their website at battleshipnc.com for a listing of hours as they change throughout the year.

All in all, this is a great day trip if you are in the area.  Take a camera and get plenty of pictures!  When you are hungery, there are plenty of local restaurants to choose from.  Great way to spend a day!
