WORDS
Words can make or mar us; words affect our psyche and they dictate the course of our lives. An acquaintance of mine told me how the words her father used to tell her affected her self-confidence; she said that her father would always tell her that she was useless and never amount to anything. Those words affected her so much that she built up a defense mechanism; she became so unfriendly and bitchy that everyone around her started avoiding her. It took a very long time for her to build up her confidence and self-esteem; it almost cost her her marriage but God helped her.
Personally, I've found out that the words that affect us most are the words spoken to us by those that we need their love and acceptance. I am affected most by the words spoken to me by my mum and one of my sisters; the words affect me so much that at times I would sink into depression. It was a cyclic process until a friend of mine told me about getting my power back. I'll go through the things she told me.
First of all, my emotions should not be controlled by anyone else but me. By allowing the words spoken to me by my family members to affect my emotions, I have given them undue power over me – the power to determine my happiness. The first thing that I need to understand is that I have the power of choice; I need to decide that the words spoken to me by these people would not affect my emotions negatively. I must make a choice on how the words spoken to me would affect me.
Also, I need to get my self-respect back and the way to getting it back is if I refuse to be insulted, that is, when those in a position of authority speak negative and derogatory words to me, I must respectfully refuse those words and set them straight. As time goes by, the people who insult you would see that you've grown beyond the insults and they would stop.
It is not right to use our words to put people down; words are so powerful that even the words we speak to ourselves will come to pass, as it is written in the book of Hebrews that the worlds were framed by the word of God; our lives are built on the foundation of the words we speak to ourselves and the words we allow other people to speak over our lives.
