By | May 5, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Clocks can be used for a few different purposes. Being able to tell the time is the obvious one. However they can also serve as an alarm to wake you up or as a stylish piece of artwork in your home. Depending on the look of their home, many people will choose a style of clock to blend in. There are a few looks to chose from with rustic, retro and antique being only a few.

As trends come and go, styles will change to reflect these. This is as true for clocks as it is for any other home furnishings. With items such as clocks, technology also has an influence on the style. Over the years clocks have been produced with many different looks and while some of the older styles may not be as fashionable these days, they can still be popular with many people.

There was much technological change during the course of the 20th century and this affected the style of clocks. Most of these would now come under the category of retro style and many people find this appealing. Older people may purchase retro clocks as a reminder of growing up. Younger people who did not see the style first time around may just find the look attractive

Some of the original clocks which were manufactured during the 20th century may have survived the ravages of time. However it you want to buy a retro clock it is usually easier to buy a modern reproduction. These look like the real thing but will typically be less expensive to buy. An older clock may also be less reliable in terms of keeping the time and this can also make buying a reproduction a better alternative.

Flip clocks were a common style prior to the advent of the digital clock. The Cifra 3 was a famous example of this style and this clock was first introduced in 1965. There are a few manufacturers that make a retro alarm clock in the style of the Cifra 3. It is a table clock which sits comfortably on a bedside cabinet and uses a beeping sound to wake you up in the morning.

Many of the hanging wall clocks of the 20th century were designed as stylish accessories rather than just as functional clocks. The starburst clock is one of the best examples of this and it was an extremely popular style. Using it in a retro themed room with a retro dining table, chairs and other accessories can provide an authentic 20th century look for your home.

One of the earliest styles of clocks that has retained its popularity is the kit-cat clock. This has been around for almost 80 years now and is styled in the shape of a cat. It was a novelty clock, as the eyes of the cat moved from side to side, as did the hanging tail. If you have kids in your home this can be a good retro clock to consider for your home.

Retro style clocks are available for a few different places. Internet retailers typically have the widest selection available and costs can range from an affordable $30 to a more expensive $150. However there are a few stores which sell retro clocks with Target being one of the better places to look.
