Walking for Your Health

By Edited Aug 22, 2015 1 4

Walking for your health is probably the easiest way for you to exercise. We do it every day. You would be surprised how many miles you put on in an average day. But there is more that you can do. In America there is an epidemic, we are the leading nation when it comes to obesity. 13% of kids today are overweight or obese. This is a scary fact. With all the new technology that us baby boomers didn't have our children sit at home in front of their computers and video games all day long. As a child, during the summer I was never home. There was always a baseball game going on in the neighborhood or a game of tag or hide and seek. Our kids to day don't know how to play outside. They are losing their imagination. What can we do.

Walking is the easiest form of exercise known to man. Just taking a walk after your evening meal can burn calories. Make it a family affair. Mandatory. Walking increases your metabolism, making it run hot up to 2 hours after you stop walking. Walking 10,000 steps is a 5 mile walk. A person who is 150 pounds can burn about 75 calories per mile. Not a bad trade off. Not only do you burn calories in an easy way, you become healthier. Walking is good for your heart and lungs making them stronger. Walking relieves stress, gives you more energy, reduces the bad cholesterol in your blood, helps you sleep better, and strengthens your bones and muscles. Walking also helps your joints become more flexable and walking is less stressful on your joints than many other forms of exercise. Walking is natural, we all do it every day. Adding a mile of two after your meal or whenever you have the time is the right thing to do.

There are other benefits of walking as well. Quality time with your loved ones. You can have some amazing conversations with your spouse or kids when out walking. Look at the pretty flowers and hear the birds chirping as you walk. Walking is wonderful for your mental outlook. There is no pressure, no ringing phones, and no stress.

Generally speaking any form of exercise you do will add years to your life. Walking is the easiest form of exercise. Why not take a walk today. You will feel better.

I agree with you that it is a good idea to talk with your kids about what you see when you walk ("the pretty flowers and the birds"). Thank you for a great article.

I love to walk too. My best record since getting the pedometer is 35,000 steps.
