Millions of Americans are looking for a way out of the traditional job setting.  Attempting to side step the 9 to 5 can be a daunting task.  There are several ways that you can leave this lifestyle behind, starting your own small business may be your way.  If you have a great business idea and would like to start a business but have no idea what to do, then your first step  should be to contact SCORE.  SCORE is the Service Corp of Retired Executives.

SCORE is a nonprofit organization that provides small business owners with free counseling, mentorship and free or low fee workshops to help them get their small business off the ground.  Their 13,000+ volunteers have expertise that expands across 62 industries.  No matter what state you are from you can find a SCORE mentor close by to help you get your business started.  With 364 chapters throughout the US, they can easily match an entrepreneur up with classes and volunteers to meet their business needs.

The SCORE organization is supported by the SBA (Small Business Administration).  Because of this funding support, when you are in need of business counseling you can call on SCORE.  The best part is that no matter how many sessions you need, there is no charge.  Each session is an hour long with as many follow ups as required for you to become successful.  Most of the counselors are actually retirees that have owned or managed their own business so they bring a wealth of knowledge to the table.

Regardless of what your business idea may be, your SCORE counselor will never divulge that information or use it for their own purposes.  As a counselor, they must annually sign a Code of Ethics agreement which includes confidentiality.  That should give you some comfort in sitting down and discussing your business idea in pursuit of assistance with obtaining your goal.

SCORE can even provide you with resources for financing your endeavors.  One great example of SCORES at work is that of ARES Wargames:  ARES Wargames Success Story.  Two soldiers returning from duty, who loved games, looked to SCORE to help them start their business.  With the help of their mentor Steve Sarcarisen they were able to put together a great business plan and get the needed funding to start their business ARES Wargames, which opened for business in September of 2010.  Check out the link above to see their story.

If you would like to get started working with SCORES, go to their website and sign up for the Simple Start Series of Workshops.  These classes will discuss Start-up basics, Business concepts, Marketing plans, financial projections, and funding sources. When you complete this course you will have a better understanding of the fundamentals of business ownership as well as having direct contact with class instructors that have real world experience in their areas of instruction.

Contact SCORE today and take your business idea to the next level.  Whether you are starting out from scratch or need help in expanding or improving your business; SCORE is there to help.
