Zojirushi rice cookers in particular are very popular. They control a large share of the rice cooker market in Japan. Now-a-days their machines are sold all over the world. This is a good thing for anyone interested in being able to prepare great tasting rice just like the Japanese. The thing is though that rice cookers can be used for much more than just cooking simple white or brown rice. That said though, the typical Japanese housewife mainly uses her rice cooker for making Japonica white rice. This is the standard sticky white rice that the Japanese eat.

If you have a Japanese rice cooker or are considering buying one it is worth finding out how to best prepare the rice to cook in it. The rice cooker will take care of the actual cooking but preparing the rice correctly can ensure that you get a perfect bowl of rice. Conversely, not preparing the rice properly means that even a top of the range rice cooker may not be able to save it. So here is a brief outline of how to prepare Japanese white rice to cook in a Zojirushi steamer. Firstly you have to measure out a specific amount of rice. This is easy because any new Zojirushi rice cooker comes with a special measuring cup. So put, say, two cups of rice into the rice cooking bowl of the rice cooker. This is removable. Then add some water and start mixing it around but be gentle with the rice because we do not want to break the grains. Next pour off the water and then give it another mix with your fingers. Again add more water and it will turn milky. Keep repeating this procedure of washing, draining and mixing until the water does not turn a white color. Finally just add water up to the mark on the inside of the cooking dish equal to the number of cups that you added.

This may sound a little confusing so why not watch a video about how to wash rice?
