While the first Silk Spectre, Sally Jupiter, fights crime for many years until prevented from doing so by the Keene Act (which outlawed crime fighters and vigilantes), her daughter, Laurie Juspeczyk, has taken over the reigns as Silk Spectre II. Ultimately Laurie engages in a romantic relationship with Doctor Manhattan and, as a result the government keeps a close eye on her and, in fact, even lives on a government base. However, when Doctor Manhattan leaves the planet, the government cuts ties with her and forces her to move off of the base. Moreover, the government freezes all of her expense accounts, essentially leaving her broke and hopeless.

Perhaps out of desperation, Laurie moves in a fellow by the name of Dan and, thereafter falls in love with him as well. However, Dr. Manhattan returns to Earth and whisks her off to the planet Mars due, in large part, to the fact that he knows Laurie wants him to save Earth. While on Mars, Laurie learns that the Comedian is her biological father, something not previously disclosed by her mother. The series ends after a final battle with Veidt whereupon she returns to Earth under the assumed identity of “Sandra Hollis” and resumes her romantic relationship with Dan.
