As is typical with a number of refrigerators that come with their own water filters, there is only one (factory) source for Samsung refrigerator filters. This water filter cartridge seems to be more expensive than the filters for other refrigerators, yet removes fewer impurities from your water supply. Unlike, say the Maytag water filter, the Samsung refrigerator filter only gets rid of chlorine and sediment. On the other hand, this is quite sufficient for most families.

However, families with pregnant women or young children may need to invest in this second filter to get rid of heavy metals. The two heavy metals most commonly found in home plumbing are lead and copper. And lead very severely impacts the intelligence of children. Although the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has set the safe level of lead at 10 micrograms per deciliter of blood since 1991, a recent study done by British scientists has discovered that levels as low as 5 micrograms per deciliter of blood can still reduce the reading and writing skills of children by 50%. Furthermore, they also found that 27% of children have between 5 and 10 micrograms of lead per deciliter of their blood.

To install this second water filter, you will need the help of a plumber. It needs to be set between your Samsung fridge and your water pipe. This second water filtration unit should come with a resin ion exchange unit that is rated to get rid of lead. Of course, this obviously makes the Samsung refrigerator filter unnecessary and superfluous.

Another problem with the Samsung refrigerator filter is that it does not get rid of the cysts of Giardia and Cryptosporidium which chlorine treatment of water does not affect. This is a problem for people with weak immune systems like young children, pregnant women, the elderly and anyone who is sick or recovering from illness. Such people should only drink water that has been boiled, unless a secondary water filter rated to remove cysts is installed.

A cheaper option is to get a large PUR or Brita water dispenser. These are really large water pitchers which come with their own water filters. These water dispensers fit into most refrigerators. The large models can store up to 18 cups of water. There are different gradings of water filter cartridges for these PUR and Brita water dispensers. So you need to be careful to buy filters which are rated to remove both cysts and lead. Unfortunately, both PUR and Brita water filters work rather slowly, especially if there is sedimentation in the water supply. What you can do is refill these water pitchers only from the water filtered through your Samsung refrigerator filter. In other words, you treat your Samsung as a pre-filter to remove sediment and chlorine, while you use the PUR or Brita to remove cysts and lead.

So what does the Samsung refrigerator filter do on its own? It removes sediment and it removes chlorine, and by all accounts it does these two things reasonably well. Each water filter cartridge lasts six months, although this obviously depends on your water quality. If there is a lot of sedimentation, or higher levels of chlorine than expected, the lifespan will be shortened.

There is not much else worth saying about the Samsung refrigerator filter. Do some shopping around both online and offline to look for the best prices. Since there have been no complaints about quality control (unlike some other brands), it is safe to order replacement water filter cartridges from online retailers like Amazon.
