Most women suffer from "Striae Distensae" or stretch marks following their pregnancy. These nasty marks are usually red streaks noticeable on the abdomen, thighs and buttocks. Sometimes stretch marks can appear on the breasts. Essentially any part of the body that is prone to swelling or expansion during pregnancy is susceptible to stretch marks.

An expectant mother commonly swells up when she is conceiving a child. The skin will stretch and will cause stretch marks to be noticeable. A mother's body will grow larger in a very short span of time, causing the skin to stretch very fast. This fast expansion of the skin is what causes scaring such as stretch marks.

It is possible to take some preventative measures to help avoid highly visible stretch marks. Here are some ways to help prevent stretch marks during pregnancy.

Drink lots of water and fruit juices to keep the skin's elasticity and avoid streaks from appearing. Keeping your body properly hydrated will also help keep your skin supple and moisturized.

Having a balanced diet during pregnancy is the best way to prevent stretch marks during pregnancy. You should plan a healthy diet to provide you and your baby the proper nutrition. However, you should not use your pregnancy as an excuse to eat whatever you desire. Often times, pregnant mother's will consume more food than what is required for mother and child. Do not cause excess weight gain due to overeating.

Eat only healthy foods that are rich in Vitamins A, D and C and also foods that are rich in protein and Zinc. Sticking to a nutritional diet will not only help with stretch marks, but will have other benefits that will make child bearing slightly easier.

Do not drink caffeinated drinks like coffee or sodas because it contributes to stretch mark formations. It is advisable to drink lots of water. If you do drink caffeinated products, then drink lots of water to cleanse the caffeine from your body.

Hydrate your skin with the help of lotions (preferable cocoa butter). This will help your skin become stronger and with stand the expansion of your skin during pregnancy. Moisturizing your skin daily by applying the lotion to your thighs, buttocks, and abdomen. The lotion will add elasticity to your skin thus avoiding stretch marks from manifesting.
