Blood pressure refers to the pressure under which blood flows through the arteries. Its level depends on three major factors, the first being, amount of blood in the system. If the volume of blood circulating in this closed system is reduced, the pressure will drop. In the same vein, if the volume of blood circulating increases, the pressure will rise.
The volume of blood in your circulation will decrease when you suffer a hemorrhage â a loss of blood from injury, an operation, or internal bleeding through peptic ulcer. If the pressure drops too low, a shock occurs â that is a state of circulatory collapse.
High blood pressure is a risk factor for heart disease, stroke (where blood arteries clog or rupture), blindness â where arteries become blocked, heart attacks, cardiac failure, and aneurysms of the aorta.
The second factor that determines the hearts pumping action is when the heart is weakened during a heart attack or by some other cardiac disease. The third factor affecting your blood pressure level is the tone of the arteries walls.
One factor can increase your risk, especially if combined with other risk factors like being overweight, being sedentary, over consumption of salt, eating to little of potassium, and engaging in high stress levels. The following ways will help reduce your increased risks of high blood pressure.
- If you are obese, shed some weight.
Overweight or obese persons are at increased risk of having high blood pressure. It has been estimated that in cases of high blood pressure, being overweight is one major cause. If overweight is a cause of hypertension, then losing weight is known to lower blood pressure.
- Reduce your consumption of salt
It is known that reducing your salt intake or consumption to half is enough to lower blood pressure. Eat no salt or low salt diets, to help you lower blood pressure.
- Quit alcohol consumption
People who drink alcohol and /Alcoholic Beverages">alcoholic beverages are known to be more likely to develop high blood pressure than those who do not drink. What alcohol does is to dilate your system and cause high blood pressure. So, quit drinking alcohol.
- Eat Bananas for potassium need
Banana is packed with potassium. Potassium as a mineral has been recommended by experts to help increase the level of potassium in those with low potassium levels. Other potassium rich foods recommended for those with hypertension and low potassium intake include tomatoes, potatoes with skins, apricots, prunes, and broccoli.
- Avoid Stress, Get Exercise and Relaxation
Do morning or midday workouts. Also, do brisk walking, stationary cycling, or jogging. Exercise should be done for at least 30 minutes daily to help reduce your risks of high blood pressure. Exercising can help you manage stress. Learn also to relax. Relaxation will help lower pressure in persons suffering hypertension.
