Weaning Breastfeeding With Love

By | Nov 24, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Weaning breastfeeding takes some time. I know that for a fact. It is even more difficult if you were the one who initiated the weaning. Most often, you will end up arguing with your baby. I am not discouraging you from weaning. It's just that you need to perceive your baby's needs and feelings when you are about to start or during this phase. In this article, you will learn how to wean from breastfeeding with love.

Weaning can sometimes seem like an impossible task but with the help of the tips below, I am sure you can push through with this process.

Fortunately, you can keep the following things in mind to make weaning a whole lot easier for you and your baby.

  • It is easier if your baby initiated the weaning. But if not, then you are off for a bumpy ride. If this is so, consider your baby's feelings and current situation.
  • Make sure that you want this for yourself and not because you were just pressured to do it. Make this a choice for yourself.
  • If you decide to wean, wean gradually. But if you were told to wean abruptly, look for any alternatives first or ask for second opinion before doing so.
  • If you decide to go on with the weaning, start with a feeding time that can be negligible by your baby. It can be the feeding during mid-afternoon. Whatever that time is, make sure you have a bucketful of amusing activities planned at hand. Examples include an afternoon stroll in the park, playground visit, snack time and drinks from sippy cups or feeding bottles.
  • Let your husband help you during this time. You can let him do the feeding so your baby can forget about nursing.
  • Put off your weaning if your baby just had a new nanny. It will be very stressful for him or her as she may feel that you are about to abandon her. Wait for your baby to get used to his or her nanny before pushing through the process.
  • Stay away from familiar feeding places. In addition, avoid your usual feeding positions. This way, your baby's mind will be off breastfeeding.
  • Take away one feeding time per week. Be sure to replace them with more fun activities to distract your baby.
  • Nursing before bedtime is the last and the most difficult feeding time to eliminate. For this, you will have to come up with separate fun activities such as reading bedtime stories, singing a lullaby, and bath and pajama time.
  • Hug or kiss your baby more often than you used to. Make your baby feel that weaning does not signify abandonment or rejection. You can even talk to your baby and make her feel loved and cared for.
  • Pump out milk from your breasts to avoid breast engorgement. This will also help you lessen milk production over time.

Weaning breastfeeding with love does take some time so be patient moms. If you need to learn more about this, you can go to many weaning breastfeeding sites. You can get more tips when you browse the pages. Good luck weaning!
