Web Site Design Mistakes You Must Avoid

By Edited Nov 13, 2013 0 0

Anybody can build a website, and the internet is filled with websites, but what makes your website stand out from the rest?  Good design and usability are what is required of  your website  to be different from the others. Here are a few glaring design spoilers to watch out for.

Avoid Mistakes

Heavy design

Web sites should load fast, your visitor must not be kept waiting. Visitors tend to lose interest very fast and a visitor lost, never returns.

In order to keep visitors create  a light and power packed design. An agile header will help speed up your loading process. Use a professional template while designing as they have provisions for all the essential design elements.

Reduce your header images and use only relevant graphics on your site. If you are using free templates that are available online choose a design that won't weigh down your page.

Messy Sidebar

It's true that  through affiliate marketing you can earn a buck or two, but I suggest you tread carefully. Cluttering your sidebars with multiple affiliate banners can harm the overall impression of your website making it look crowded and confusing. Another thing is when you include any affiliate ad material your visitors are given the impression that you are recommending those establishments and if they don’t respond well to your clients it can harm your reputation as well.

If you want to include affiliate advertising on your site, approve only relevant and genuine companies that you can vouch for.  Other than these ads use only relevant widgets that are absolutely necessary.

Links – get them underlined!

Links should be easy to notice and visitors should be able to identify them at s glance. Underling links have been an old practice but people are so used to such links that they would find it easier to discern one if it's underlined and written in blue ink. This will help you get a clear ‘ call to action.’

White Spaces – Add lots of them

White spaces are essential to give your site a neat and professional look. A clear white background and well spaced out content makes your site legible and this is very important. A visitor should be able to get the  gist of your products and services with a quick skim through of your page.

Colored backgrounds tend to faze out the content, so choose a proper color scheme for your site. Preferably stick to just 2 to 3 shades .

Stale Content

Browsers love fresh content, it’s a sign that you are serious about your business site. This will target organic traffic to your site. And more visitors give you more potential clients.

Imitations – a big NO

Under no circumstances should you copy your competitors. The aim of the game is to stand out, not blend in! Of course you can get cues and ideas from competitor sites but employ them differently. Design your site such that it stands out in usability and design.

Imitations – a big NO

Propaganda – a must

Just building an awesome website won’t do the trick. You must devise an effective marketing strategy to support your site. Actively participate in discussion forums, link to social media networking sites etc. In your business niche.  Besides this employ SEO to target more visitors to your site by improving visibility.

Propaganda – a must

There are several websites on the internet and the competition here is pretty aggressive. To outdo all of them and earn a better revenue your website should be impressive and unique.
