Wedding Cake Decorating Ideas

By | Jan 11, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

If you are interested in creating a wedding cake, either for your own wedding or for somebody else's wedding, you will be able to save a lot of money as opposed to purchasing a cake. You might also be interested in learning to decorate wedding cakes to start your own business as a cake baker. Either way, decorating wedding cakes can take some time and patience, but overall, learning to make them is not really that difficult.

You can browse through wedding planning guides, both in print and online, to get wedding cake decorating ideas. The size and style of cake will be mainly determined by the wedding being planned, including the number of guests. There are many different styles of wedding cakes and wedding cake decorations, most of which will involve creating a tiered cake. However, one should never feel limited by what is currently popular because a wedding cake is a personal choice for the bride and groom.

The basis of any wedding cake is the cake itself. Always use a cake recipe designed specifically for making a wedding or tiered cake. Standard wedding cake decorating tools will include straight sided baking pans, which will be lined with parchment paper before baking the cake to insure the cake comes out well. Some other tools are a cake leveler or large serrated knife, a cake icing spatula, a sturdy platter or base on which to build the cake, and ideally a turn table to make decorating the cake easier. If you are making a tiered cake, you will also need the cake pillars and platforms, and possibly wooden dowels as well to provide support.

There are books and guides available both in print and online that can give you step-by-step instructions for making a wedding cake, which is a valuable resource for those who have never attempted making one before. Once the cakes are baked, they will need to be cooled and leveled, and crumb-coated with a thin layer of frosting. Then the cake layers should be individually frosted so that they have a smooth surface.

At this point, the decorating can begin. Wedding cake decorating tips will include rounded tips for making swirls, pin dots, and other types of small embellishments. Star tips are also useful for making decorative borders and accents. If you are planning to add frosting roses or flowers, you will also need specialty tips designed to make roses and leaves.

When decorating a wedding cake, one of the main concerns is often transporting the cake. As a rule, the cake should be decorated and transported in individual layers, being assembled using a wedding cake stand at the site of the wedding reception. Always take along your wedding cake decorating supplies and frostings so that you can make any necessary repairs, and complete the final decorating after the cake is assembled. Decorative wedding cake boxes can be provided to guests to take home cake slices after the special occasion
