Supplements have a had place in bodybuilding for a long time. What most people don't know is that they can and should be used during weight loss as well. It's really easy when we're dieting to get discouraged. Having a solid diet plan, exercising regularly and taking supplements is what I refer to as the weight loss trifecta. It is a proven method that creates results when adhered to. If you are already doing a great job on your weight loss journey without supplements, these supplements will enhance your weight loss performance drastically. These supplements will help you lose weight a little faster and a little easier.




  If you've read any of my other articles, you know I can talk on and on about water. That's because not only is it necessary for life, but it's a necessity for any bodybuilding or weight loss goal. Water is a natural appetite suppressant. Usually my first piece of advice for anyone who's on the weight loss journey is drink water. Are you hungry? Drink 8 ounces of water and then have a meal, and then drink a more ounces water. You will feel very full. Water has 0 calories so drink as much of it as you like. If you are having a hard time drinking a lot of water, as it can get bland after a bit, you can add a powdered beverage to it. There are a lot of these flavors that come in little packets on the market that have 10 cal and zero carbs. This will help to keep you from getting dehydrated. When you get dehydrated your fat cells get dehydrated as well, and thanks to our biology a dehydrated fat cell is much less likely to be tapped for energy. This makes our goal of fat loss even harder. So Drink water!!




 I'm sure you've heard the old adage, "take your vitamins". Well, it's never been more true than when you are on a weight loss journey too lose weight. We must have a deficit in our calorie intake, so our body uses fat stores for energy, thus we lose weight. During these times it is very important that we take multivitamins to make sure that we get all the necessary vitamins and minerals that our body needs to work properly. Especially when we are exercising with a lot of cardio.


Fat Burners

  If you have your diet and exercise schedule mapped out, taking fat burners will increase your results. What fat burners do is increase your metabolic rate. Some of the best fat burners include all the previous topics mentioned in this article such as CLA, green tea. They also usually include a ton of caffeine, so if you are very sensitive to stimulants I would not suggest taking them. One of my favorite fat burners, and the one I recommend to my friends, is put out by company called Animal, and it is called Cuts. This is a pretty hard-core fat burner and like I said earlier if you are sensitive to stimulants I would not suggest this fat burner. The reason I like and use this fat burner the most is because it is a powerful fat burning cocktail. You need to make sure you drink a lot of water when taking these as you will sweat like no tomorrow. You can easily become dehydrated the same day you start taking them and you will get a killer headache.



Conjugated linoleic acids (CLA), are naturally found in the meat and sometimes the dairy products of cud chewing animals (i.e. cows). It is used for its incredible body weight management properties. There have been over 30 clinical studies that have concluded that CLA has an impact on fat mass and helps increase lean mass. CLA is also a anticarcinogen. Some researchers from the University of Wisconsin did an experiment where they applied a beef extract to the skin of mice. The mice were then exposed to a strong carcinogen (cancer causing agent). 16 weeks later, the researchers counted the number of tumors developed by the mice and they found that the mice exposed to the beef extract had 20% fewer tumors.  Michael Pariza, the scientist who discovered CLA said "few anticarcinogens, and certainly no other known fatty acids, are as effective as CLA in inhibiting carcinogenesis in these models" when the identity of this anticarcinogen was discovered in 1987. In 2008, CLA received a letter of no objection from the FDA on its GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status for many food categories including nutritional bars, fluid milk and fruit juices. It is widely available and fairly cheap.


Green Tea


Green tea is made from the leaves of plan called Camellia Sinensis. In fact all tea is made from the same plant (save for chai) the difference is that they have all undergone different amounts of oxidation during processing. Green tea goes through minimal oxidation during processing, hence it's still green. Over the last few decades there have been many studies conducted on green tea, and it has been determined that it has many health benefits. Evidence suggests that people who drink green tea on a regular basis have a lower risk of heart disease and cancer. Green tea also has a lot of weight loss properties. It does not raise the metabolic rate enough to produce immediate weight loss, but a green tea extract has been shown to induce thermogenesis and stimulate fat oxidation, boosting the metabolic rate 4% without increasing the heart rate. This is perfect for people who are sensitive to stimulants and can't take fat burners. I add green tea to my water on a regular basis. Be sure that you use the unsweetened variety, especially if you are in ketosis.


Protein Powders


When dieting it is essential to eat enough protein with out blowing your calorie intake out of proportion. This will make it so that your muscles do not deteriorate under the calorie deficit. Protein powders go a long way towards making this happen easily and making you feel full. A good protein powder should have roughly 120 cal per serving and at least 24 g of protein per serving. There are a lot of them out there so you'll have to shop around to find one that fits this criteria.


  Remember, all these things help along your weight loss journey but the one thing you need to focus on the most is your diet. Abs are made in the kitchen, not the gym. If you're having a hard time with your diet you can make up the difference with cardio but this is literally a pain in the butt. So stick to your diet. These supplements may be the edge you need to finally start achieving your weight loss goals.
