Governments from all over the world should agree on reducing water consumption in an effort to save fresh water. Since everyone in the world uses the toilet on a daily basis, it is clear that this requires lots of water. We appreciate the people who created an important thing that can be used to save water. Few decades ago, a typical toilet used an amount of 7 gallons or more each time they were flushed, that’s a large amount of wasted water in just one flush. Later, technological advances have allowed the design of new models of toilets that have a new feature. They required only 5.5 gallons of water for each flush. During 1980’s, toilet tanks that only requires 3.5 gallons of water per flush were developed. After the National energy policy act H.R.776 went into effect, toilets were all required to consume only 1.6 gallons of water per flush. So it was mandatory that people in the toilet making industry to make a toilet tank that meets the required 1.6 gallon per flush. After the act came into effect, there were a lot of complaints from people because of the poor flushing performance from the toilets available. This is where the low flush toilets come in. So what are low flush toilets? They are one of the most common toilets that we use today. The only problem is that most of these designs perform poorly, and many people complained to manufacturers because of this.

So the manufacturers decided to upgrade their porcelain throne making it a lot more efficient than the traditional toilet. They invented the low flow or low flush toilets. Unfortunately, these too weren’t that much of a success. The public still complained about the same thing, the poor flushing capabilities, especially in newly remodeled homes. Surveys from almost all over the world proved that newly installed units exhibited some problems.

The problems encountered with the low flush toilets are:

  • Multiple flushes. What’s the point of the mandated 1.6 water per gallon flushes if you’re going to flush your toilet three to four times every time so that you can dispose of the solid waste? Flushing several times means you’re using a lot more water than required.
  • Residue. This problem may also require you to flush several times every time you use the toilet. This just simply means that 1.6 gallons of water may not be sufficient to get a residue-free bowl every time you flush the toilet.
  • Some units even clog easily, and this can be really bothersome. Not only that, but they requires much more maintenance compared to older models that use 3.5 gallons per flush units. Because of the clogging, overflowing may occur, causing more damage to the toilet tank.
  • Another problem proven to be somewhat challenging was the plumbing, and this was mainly due to the lack of water pressure, leading to poor performance.
  • Frequent plumbing services. The more you require the services of the plumbers, the more money you lose. These toilet tanks shouldn’t require a lot of maintenance at all. You’re not really getting your money’s worth for a product that performs like this.

People who have encountered these problems tried to adjust their fill mechanisms to increase the water capacity and to improve their performance. So the idea of water conservation literally goes down the toilet when people revert to these methods just so they could improve their toilet flushing performance.

There are actually three kinds of low flush toilets.

  • Gravity tank toilets are the commonly used type. They function by using the amount and volume of water in its reserved tank for flushing.
  • Pressure-tank toilets are similar to the gravity type models, but have a secondary tank. They also require compressed air inside the tank so that the pressure of each flush is increased.
  • Flushometer toilets are used in commercial buildings and have no tanks, but instead use a pressure sensitive valve which releases high water pressures.
