If you're planning on going camping or backpacking, you know there are a lot of things to pack. You need to store your equipment and any emergency supplies you might need. You also need to have food. If you're going on a long trip you're going to need to pack even more food but you need to be sure that it isn't going to take up too much space. It also has to be easy to eat or cook. Backpacking food ideas are not the same as the food you would take on a picnic or on a fancy vacation. You need different types of food for this.
Easy To Cook
The first category of foods to take with you when you are backpacking is foods that are easy to cook. When you're going to be gone for a long time, you don't want to eat cold or uncooked foods the entire time. That means you need some foods that can be heated up or cooked but at the same time you don't want to have to spend a long time cooking. So what foods can you take with you? Well you may want dried noodles or dried rice. All you need for these meals is to add hot water.
Easy to Eat
Easy to eat foods are things that you don't need to stop and eat. These are foods that don't require any type of utensils or any time to cook. All you have to do is pull them out of your backpack and eat as you walk. These foods are things like beef jerky, granola/energy/protein bars or trail mix. These things are simple and easy to eat though they are only small snacks and not generally full meals. A few other great things are fruits, vegetables, nuts and pretzels because these things do not have to be cooked in any way in order to eat.
Easy to Carry
One of the most important things when you are going to be backpacking is taking up very little space and adding very little weight. When you pack food, you want to think about these same things. That means you need to take as few heavy, large food items as you can. Some easy to carry foods are snack foods such as those in the easy to eat category. Another thing to think about is that you can downsize some items. If you're going to take some of the easy to cook foods, you can package them in smaller bags and take only the amount you need.
There are many different types of backpacking food ideas and of course everyone has their own opinion. It will depend on where you're going and how long you will be gone. It will also depend on how much other stuff you are going to need to carry. Each trip you take will be different from any other and it will be different from anyone else's.
