What Are The Best Sippy Cups That Don't Leak

By Edited Sep 17, 2015 0 0

Is There Even Such A Thing As A Leak Proof Sippy Cup?

If you have any experience as a parent you know that parenting is always a bit like walking a tightrope. You want to carefully balance on a small line without wavering too far in any one direction. You need to teach your kids to be self-sufficient and capable of doing things for themselves but you also don't want to constantly clean up messes and nurse wounds for no good reason.

As a parent of a young toddler it's a nice step to move away from the bottle and give your child a sippy cup but it's annoying to think about all the drips, messes, and spills that are coming down the line.

Sippy cups that do not leak are great for specific activities and times of the day. They allow your child the independence to hold the cup on his own but minimize the chances for spills and leaks, which makes your life easier. But are there really any toddler cups that are truly leak proof? If a toddler is supposed to get drink out of it then how can it be?

In a true sence of the word no sippy cup is actually going to stop all leaks but most of the good cups will stop almost all leaks and spills. The sacrifice will be the ease of getting the drink and they will almost never be good at teaching young kids to drink out of standard cups that have no lids.

Having said that toddlers who fall asleep in a crib with a cup in their hand need that cup to be as leak resistant as possible. Likewise toddlers in car seats also need cups that are unlikely to spill all over them. For these and other situations there are some pretty awesome toddler cups out there that almost entirely eliminate the risk for drips and spills. You may not find them sitting on the shelf at your local supermarket but they're there if you care to look around for them.

The Best Leak Proof Sippy Cups For Your Children

The Thermos Foogo Phases Insulated Sipper

THERMOS FOOGO Vacuum Insulated Stainless Steel 7-Ounce Soft Spout Sippy Cup with Handles, Pink/Purple

I know this is not going to be the best choice for all kids out there but all in all I like the Foogo Phases because it's going to last a long time, converts into different styles, is insulated so that it keeps your child's drinks cold, and it's constructed from a very rugged body... ohh yeah, it's leak proof too. You'll find when tipping it over the only liquid that comes out is any left behind drink that was sipped through the valve but never actually drunk by the child. If your child hasn't had anything from this stainless steel sipper then you shouldn't expect any leaks at all. I also like thta it comes in a variety of color schemes.

The Safe Sippy 2 2-in-1 Sippy to Straw Bottle

Much like the Foogo featured above the Safe Sippy is also insulated and made from a very rugged body. It is also not going to leak on you and your diaper bag either as the valve is very well designed. You'll find that this cup is more geared towards a child's stages too. The Foogo has a hard spout whereas the Safe Sippy can be used as a sippy cup or a straw cup giving you a bit more versatility in use at the expense of ease of cleaning. It's not that it's hard to clean it's just that it takes slightly more effort.

The Gerber Graduate Fun Grips Spill Proof Cup

This set of cups are among the most common looking sippy cups you can find but they really are fantastic to have around. They are far simpler than the Thermos and the SafeSippy and although they aren't insulated or made from stainless steel they are still quite durable. They are also cheaper to and considering their parts are interchangeable it makes it much more reasonable to own a few of these so that you aren't having to frantically clean your one main sippy while your child screams at you for his drink. Did I mention this set is completely leak proof too? They are and they are also some of the top rated sippy cups for sale today.

A Spill Proof Cup Is Better For Older Toddlers

They Train Kids To Drink From Regular Cups Better Than Sippers

Yes, there is a time and place for leak proof technology but when you're in the home and you're toddler is a bit older and he is drinking something that doesn't make much of a mess like water it's worth have a quality training cup on hand so that you can slowly teach your child to drink like a regular kid or adult.

The best training cups do tend to have lids but they don't use spouts like you would find on the sippers. In stead they are usually designed to enable the child to drink from any direction on the cup and they do not allow the child to turn the cup upside down without dribbling over them.

The best options in this category are those that have a shield or guard that prevents all the fluid in the cup from immediately spilling out all over the place. In some cases the child's drink can dribble out quickly but not spill all at once. You can find a good demonstration of how these types of training cups work over on YouTube.com.

My son uses an awesome spill proof cup by Oxo. He loves it for water and tea if you can believe it. We do not use it for anything with sugar and never in the car but for older kids it may even work well in these situations too.

My Favorite Spill Proof Toddler Drinking Cup

The OXO Tot Training Cup

This cup is not leak proof. It's not leak resistant either. It is however designed to prevent your child from spilling all of his drink all over himself in one motion. The cup is omnidirectional and it has a plastic screen that covers the entire top opening of the cup with small holes all around it to mimic the feel and speed of regular drinking cups. If all your child ever uses are sippy cups and straw cups then controlled use of standard adult glasses will likely be delayed. This cup (or something similar) is invaluable to parents of small kids.
