What Are Your Dreams - Forget Your Financial Goals and Rediscover Passion in Your Life

Before you are really able to attain financial independence, you will need to define what that independence is for you. Undoubtedly, you will need to set and obtain many goals along your journey, but before you even figure out what you financial goals are, you must ask yourself one question. 

What are your dreams?

Sure, this may sound a little hokey, but when was the last time that you thought about your dreams? Remember when you were in grade school and had more dreams than you could count. You wanted to be an inventor, an author, and an astronaut. When we get older we have a tendency to forget about our dreams and become too engrossed with the daily grind.

An Excersize to Rediscover Passion in Your Life

So take a moment and think for a few minutes about your dreams. Do not just think about your financial dreams. Think about your intellectual dreams, spiritual and psychological dreams. Think about your professional dreams. Think about what adventures you want to accomplish and what “mountains” you want to climb.

This little exercise will not change your life, but it might help you gain a little more perspective with where you are at and where you want to go. So, before you start setting financial goals in your life, you need to know where you are going. You need to know what your dreams are.

Do you want to be a millionaire or just live comfortably?  Do you want to travel the world or be able to give to the world?  The beauty of this exercise is that there is no right or wrong answer.  Let your mind take over and determine what kind of a person and what kind of a life you want to lead.  Think back to that little kid that you once were. 

To become accomplish your dreams, you will need to set much more than just financial goals to get there.  Other areas of your life are just as, if not more, important than your financial well-being.  Do not simply think about your finances in isolation.  Think about how they will augment who you dream to be. 

Seek a little help – Read a book

The Dream Manager

There are countless books out there about goal setting and following your dreams, but The Dream Manager by Matthew Kelly

is one of the most inspirational, short, and easy-to-read books out there.  This book is written with an emphasis on finance and careers, but most importantly is stresses that you must rediscover your dreams.  This is a must read for anyone who wants to find the passions in your life. 


  • Know where you are going in your financial future and define what financial independence is to you.
  • Forget about your goals. What are your dreams? What makes you passionate about your life?
  • Once you know your dreams you can start creating financial “goals” to achieve your dreams.
