What Are the Advantages of Cordless Lawn Mowers
So Why Choose a Cordless Lawn Mower?
There are some people who just love mowing their lawn and show great pride in keeping it evenly cut and tidy. Personally, I can't see the attraction and it's just one of those many jobs that has to be done. Whatever your feelings about it you will know that it is always best to have the right tools for the job. For many years, for most people this has meant a gas powered lawn mower, although corded electric mowers have also grown in popularity.
More recently, however, cordless lawn mowers have come onto the scene and have slowly but surely started to become more popular.
So why should this be? Well there a number of issues with gas powered lawn mowers. Firstly, there is the mess associated with handling gasoline and oil cans. If you, like me, have experience of refuelling a gas mower and accidentally spilling it everywhere you will know what I mean. From a safety point of view this really cannot be a good thing.
Secondly, starting a gas powered mower can be quite troublesome as they rely on a pull cord mechanism. My old mower would take several attempts to start, especially on damp spring mornings, by which time my arm would feel like it was about to drop off and I was feeling very frustrated. Cordless lawn mowers start with just a pull of a lever and will start every time without fail.
Another issue is how much noise gas powered mowers make. You may not worry about it too much yourself while you are mowing away, but your neighbors may not feel the same way! Cordless electric lawn mowers are considerably quieter, so the disturbance factor is significantly reduced.
Gas powered mowers are relatively inefficient machines and will throw out far more emissions than you would expect for such a small engine. It cannot be claimed that cordless lawn mowers are emission free, because they are not. Whilst you may not experience the emissions first hand while you are using it, of course the process of charging the battery will cause emissions back at the power station. Unless your power supplier uses only green sources of generation that is.
Whilst corded electric lawn mowers do overcome the issues outlined above they do have problems of their own - i.e. that electric cable that you have to trail around with you. Anyone who has used corded electric mowers will know what a nuisance this is with it continually getting caught on trees and shrubs, not to mention knocking off the tops of flowers along the way. It can also be rather hazardous as there is the real risk of accidentally cutting through the cable.
Some people have anxieties about the range of cordless lawn mowers. However, most mowers will cut up to a third of an acre from a single charge which is more than enough for most people. If you have a larger area you might consider buying a model with a removable battery and buy a second battery. Obviously if you have a very large area then you will probably need to stick with a gas powered mower.
Overall, I think that cordless lawn mowers are well worth considering if you are in the market for a new mower, and the price compares favorably with traditional lawn mowers too.
