What Is A Deke?

Rating: 0

A deke, also known as a dangle is a technique used in hockey where a quick move is used to try and trick the defender so you can pass them with control of the puck.      A deke can be used against either a defending opponent or a goalie when trying to score.

A deke is used in conjuction with stick handling and typically consists of one of a few things which can be customized by each player to suit their abilities.  These variables include changing up the speed and direction of both your body as well as the puck.

Two of the most common maneuvers when deking are the toe drag and the back hand toe drag.  A toe drag is performed by pushing the puck forward when stick handling then quickly pulling it back towards yourself using the toe of your blade.  The backhand toe drag is very similar except you use the back side of your blade instead of the front.

To sum up, a deke is basically a move used to fake out your opponent in hockey. Some other sports have also adopted the name deke, but it is predominantly a Canadian term.
