What Is Hypnosis

By | Oct 24, 2009 | 1 Comments | Rating: 0

Hypnosis has got to be one of the subjects with the most misinformation around. This is probably because many people have the image of a hypnotist to someone who is a bit of a fraud. This myth perpetuated by all the shows about hypnotist to make people do things that they don't want to do. Also people have a fear of being forced to do something against their will even though a hypnotist in reality can't make them do this.

First of all let's talk a little bit about what hypnosis actually is. Hypnosis refers to a completely natural state of awareness that is also completely safe. Basically it is a method of allowing you to become more suggestible so that you can use your subconscious to learn how to do something or help you to do something that you want to do.

Many people are very sceptical over whether hypnosis actually works and of course they have a good reason to be. Hypnosis has been around for a long time as in that time it is created a bit of a bad reputation for itself. However many people really believe that it does work for certain things such as giving up smoking and hypnosis for sleep.

When people talk about the subconscious mind what do they really mean? The subconscious is where all our behaviour and creativity comes from. We aren't actively aware of it but we can use the power of suggestion to influence what it thinks. This is the basis of what hypnosis actually does, it uses your subconscious to get you to do things that are good for you and that you want to do. Hypnosis can't make you do anything that you don't want to do in the first place, so you shouldn't worry about a hypnotist controlling you can getting you to do something against your will. Many people don't realise this however which is part of the reason hat hypnosis has a bad reputation.

If people talk about hypnotherapy you should make sure that they are actually registered to do therapy because in most cases they aren't. Hypnosis is pretty much the same thing as hypnotherapy, but unless the person is registered as a proper therapist then they shouldn't claim that they are performing some sort of therapy. There is no scientific evidence that hypnosis works although that doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't. In some cases hypnosis is thought to be a promising therapy.

My mother quit smoking about 20 years ago after hynosis. She swears by it. She goes so far as to claim she had no problems with cravings.
