What Is Oil Pulling?

 Oil Pulling has been around for a very long time. But what is it exactly?

In the most basic terms, oil pulling is when you use natural substances, oil, to clean and detoxify your teeth, mouth, and body. It has been shown to help whiten teeth and improve overall gum and mouth hygiene and health. 

Oil pulling originated in India thousands of years ago, and was not until the 1990's that the practice was introduced into Western culture by Dr. F. Karach.

What To Do

 First, decide which oil you would like to swish around in your mouth like mouthwash. Popular choices are coconut oil and olive oil, but sesame oil is highly recommended. 

Then, take about 1-2 teaspoons (depending on how comfortable you are with it) and swish inside your mouth just like you would do with mouthwash for 20 minutes. In this time, the oil should combine with your saliva and turn into a white milky substance and is ready to be spit out.

After the 2o minutes, spit the oil out into the sink or more preferably the garbage can, do not swallow it. 

Be sure to then rinse your mouth out well with warm water, and brush your teeth after to get the oil and after taste out.

What It Does

 It is recommended that if you decide to try oil pulling and use it as part of your daily or weekly regime, you do it in the morning on an empty stomach. What oil pulling is supposed to do it clean and detox your body and mouth of the toxins. Also, it can help naturally whiten your teeth. People say that after doing oil pulling that they feel more energized, reduction in headaches and other body pains, and increased mood. 

Oil pulling is also said to reduce risk of mouth diseases such as gingivitis and common cavities.

Final Thoughts

 Oil pulling has been around for a very long time. It has already been shown to provide a large amount of benefits, for mouth health and overall body health. It might take some getting used to, especially when we are so used to using mouthwash for about 30 seconds, let alone 20 minutes. 

It seems that going natural and organic for health and beauty is becoming more and more popular. When you think about it, what are we really putting into our bodies using all these manufactured type toothpastes, shampoos, face washes, etc. it only makes sense to use natural products for our bodies, and sometimes that is what is best. So far, I have switched from using hair products such as creams and lotions to just simply pure organic coconut and grapeseed oil as my only product, and have seen way more amazing results in just under two weeks than I ever have using big brand names. 

Oil pulling is definitely worth giving a try, but it's not for everyone. It takes time to go natural and start using natural products for your body, but I think it is definitely worth it.
