If you have graduated from college or you are already repaying your student loan, of course you would want to reduce or minimize your monthly fees. But if you are still in a difficult situation in paying your monthly payments for your student loan, you can find the student loan forbearance a huge help to you if you qualify.

Student loan forbearance is a system used by lending institutions that helps you out when you are having a difficult time in paying your monthly payments. Although not all applicants may be qualified to get a student loan forbearance, once you passed the criteria, you can be allowed to avail postponement, extension of repayment of your debt, and even reduced your loan payment dues.

To find out about a student loan forbearance, these are the two types you can ask about from a lending institution:

Discretionary Forbearance

You may be granted discretionary student loan forbearance if you are in definite financial adversity situations that affect the repayment of your debt. This is probably the most common type of student loan forbearance that is used. You may qualify for this if you are in these situations:

  • If you are studying and your enrollment status is less than half-time.
  • If you have ave become unemployed or you are over the maximum deferment time limit.
  • If you are in poor health that does not let you work full time.
  • If you are in a bad situation that drastically affects your livelihood or income that leads you into economic instability in your life.
Discretionary forbearance also gives you an option on how much you can pay even at a very minimal amount as long you want. The most important thing is that you have given something than nothing at all. This way, you can have more time to earn more money and pay your student loan without the trouble of worrying of not making to pay a fixed amount as other loans would require.

Mandatory Forbearance

You can request mandatory forbearance if you are in a particular circumstance. You can request one of these if you fit the following qualifications.

  • If you are engaged in a National Service position and you have received the award under the National Community Service Trust Act of 1993.
  • If you are into an internship or residency program. (this is usually granted to students in the medical field or any programs that require internship or residency services)
  • If you are in any student loan forgiveness program.
Student loan forbearance is a very good option to consider aiding you especially if you are in a period of financial difficulties, poor health, and experiencing a decrease in working hours or circumstances where you find yourself ineligible for student loan deferment. In order to be familiar with all of these, you need to talk to your lender and ask what your best options are.
