Popularity of online shopping

I love online shopping, and have had good and bad experiences with my purchases bought off the internet. With the internet becoming a more popular place to shop and facilitated by gadgets such as our smartphones, iPads, laptops and so on, a purchase is simply a click followed by keying in our credit card details.

With e-commerce websites making it so interactive to browse their e-catalog and providing various modes of payment options for consumers, it is no wonder that more and more people are spending money on online shopping.

Online shopping can be a really great experience, but knowing what to look out for can save you the hassle of dealing with a website that does not live up to your expectations.

Tips for online shopping

Always buy from reputable websites.

Whenever you buy from a website that you have not purchased from before, always do a background check before parting with your money. I find that the best check always comes from user reviews. A simple search in Google can give you that information within minutes. Customers who are not satisfied with their experience tend to leave reviews for other people to see, so you may want to do your research before buying. A few bad reviews may not spoil the deal, but when you see too many negative reviews, it may be time to rethink your purchase. Reputable sites will also have credible privacy policies.

A privacy policy tells you how information is collected when you visit their website and how it is being used. Last of all, they should have secure payment gateways. This means sensitive information such as your credit card details are being encrypted when you are performing a transaction. The easiest way to spot one is to look at your browser for https://. Do note that this is only important when you are paying for an item, the other pages of the website do not need to be secure.

Purchases do not live up to your expectations.

The difference between online shopping and shopping at the mall is that you get to see and touch the item physically at the mall. It is true that mall prices may be more expensive, but at least you know what you are paying for. I have purchased clothes from online websites, and although I am satisfied with most of them, there are a few that do not fit right or have materials that are too flimsy. Cosmetic purchases may be more complicated, especially when buying foundations. There are a few brands that I like and the only reason that I buy them online is because they do not carry those in where I live. What I do is I purchase or request for samples first before buying the full size product. Watch out for prices that seem too good to be true, sometimes the quality may not live up to your expectations.

Purchases do not arrive.

This is one of the worst scenarios. I have had purchases that did not arrive after waiting for two months, and it is partly my fault because I did not opt for shipping options which offer tracking information. This option tends to be more expensive, but offers you a way to track the status of your purchases. My recommendation is to always opt for this option as it is a much more secure way, if you really want to save money, only opt for normal mail when your purchase amount is low.

Return Policy

If you are purchasing an expensive item, you may want to check the return policy of the merchant. Some merchants offer free returns, but will expect you to pay for return shipping and re-shipping the item. Some merchants do not offer any return policy.

Knowing what to look out for when shopping online can be a great experience. Give it a try and have fun shopping!
