The reality of affiliate marketing is that most people who get into this business will not make more than 100$/month. In other words, you shouldn't expect to make a lot of money unless you respect the following general rules:
 1. Create a site or a blog that actually turns visitors into buyers

2. Traffic generation: You will need to have a lot of visitors coming to your site because only a few of your visitors will turn into actual buyers.

3.  You should take time to figure out which products you should be promoting in the first place. Figure out what works for you and your style and what doesn't. Not every affiliate program works for every person.

We're only human and we get suckered into the dream that we could make millions online overnight.  People like this think that all they need to do is write a couple of articles and the money will follow.

The amount of effort you need to put into your affiliate business all depends on how much money it is you are planning on making. People who are quick on their feet and can adapt to different types of situations can make a couple of thousand dollars in 2 years. This rough estimate assumes you already work full-time and that you are a complete beginner.

Those who choose to get into this business will quickly understand that the first couple of months are always the hardest.  You'll realize that you're putting so much effort into your affiliate business but the results just aren't showing. The important thing to focus on initially is to be making sales and continuing to focus on making sales.

Probably, the most important element to any affiliate business is generating traffic.  This is because like a mentioned earlier, only a few of your website/blog visitors will turn into buyers.

You have to take the time to get to know the people you are attracting to your business. The better you understand them, the better you can target your offers to them and the more sales you'll end up making.  You also need to figure out preselling if you want to make it in this business. Preselling is the process of turning a non-buyer into a buyer. Basically, it's when you are getting people in the mood of pulling out their credit cards and giving you their money.

With time, you'll learn a lot in affiliate marketing. It can take years to get the hang of this business but don't get discouraged because in the end it will all be worth it.  You get what you put in. You read what you sow. In other words, the energy you put into your affiliate business if done right will turn into the money you are hoping you'll earn.
