What Your Lingerie Says About You

By | Aug 28, 2009 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Mark Twain said, "Clothes make the man." Do clothes make the woman as well? What about what she wears underneath? When it comes to undergarments, men don't have a lot of options: boxers, briefs, or boxer briefs. Skimpier cuts for guys will go unmentioned for the sake of good taste. What about "unmentionables" for women? Is there a right or wrong style or does comfort rule? Lingerie speaks volumes about a woman, even when no one else sees it. Choosing your undergarments doesn't have to be difficult if you arm yourself with a little "undie" foreknowledge. Let's start from the bottoms and work our way up.

Women's underwear comes in so many shapes, sizes and fabrics; a girl hardly knows where to begin! Panty basics, from smallest to largest amount of required fabric, include thongs, bikinis, boy shorts, and briefs. Combinations and cross style-configurations of these styles broaden the range of options considerably. Whether a cut will fit well depends a lot on the woman's body contours. Every woman will find a certain cut (and sometimes a brand) that fits her body best. Even so, there are other considerations.

Your plans for the day and what you'll be wearing will dictate which panties to slip on in the morning. For example, going for a jog necessitates a panty with more coverage, while a slinky sheath dress requires bottoms that won't cause a visible panty line. If you'll be wearing low-rider jeans to go out with friends, waist-high panties aren't going to cut it. Comfort is key, however. Don't wear a thong if flossing your derriere doesn't appeal to you, and avoid "granny pants" briefs if they bunch or roll. Patterns and colors are up to you, but make sure that whatever you choose won't show through the fabric of the clothes you plan to wear.

According to an April 2009 New York Times article by Laura M. Holson, experts say that 8 in 10 women wear the wrong bra size. When purchasing a bra, choose a retailer who offers professional bra fittings to ensure your bra fits perfectly. Signs that you are wearing the wrong bra include denting of the skin under the strap on the shoulder, indentation at the sides of your back and cups that fit too snugly or too loosely. While your correct size may surprise you, a good fit leads to better comfort and a more flattering silhouette.

Which bra style is right for you? Depending on breast size, there are a variety of styles that work well. Smaller breasted women may choose demi-cup and push up bras that will lift and give a fuller look. Large breasted women might consider full coverage bras and bras that have wider straps for better comfort. Some bras have under wires that offer better support, while some women prefer bras without wires. Some bras even have air pockets in them to promote better cleavage. Of course, in addition to choosing a bra style, you'll have your pick of materials and adornments for comfort and fashion.

Wearing cotton briefs and a sports bra all the time can be tempting, but there is one main reason to avoid this. Wearing attractive underwear that makes you feel pretty can be a real boost to self-esteem. If you're thinking, "She's crazy, I don't care what my underwear looks like!" consider this: how do you feel when you wear clothes that don't match or don't fit right? Poorly coordinated and frumpy clothes make you feel dowdy and unattractive. Even if no one else is going to see your underwear, choosing pretty lingerie is something you do for yourself. You will be more confident knowing that your figure is well supported, making your clothes fit better, and when your bra and panties coordinate, you'll feel more put together and ready to take on the day.

Next time you replace the dingy standbys in your lingerie drawer, shop smart and buy well fitted bras that lift and support and panties that are comfortable and practical for your everyday attire. Splurge a bit on higher quality undergarments that will wear better and last longer than their cheaper counterparts. Lastly, buy underwear that you like; if your bra and panties make you feel attractive, you are sure to have an extra spring in your step when you wear them. Your choice of underwear says a lot about how you feel about yourself, how you want others to see you, and whether your physical appearance is important to you. With careful selection, your lingerie will secretly tell the word what a confident, beautiful, and composed woman you are.
