Why is breakfast the most important meal of the day then?

So first of all let's quickly look at why breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Well firstly the food that you eat any time of the day is fuel for your body. Just like you would refuel your car before a journey, you should refuel your body after a sleep where it has been shut down. This is essential preparation for the day ahead.

Secondly, whereby you may not feel starving hungry when you first wake up, once you have left the house and made your way to work or school, it won't be long until hunger creeps up on you. This is not good because it will just cause you to snack before you reach lunchtime, and often the foods convenient to snack on may not necessarily be very good for you. If you eat breakfast in the morning before you leave the house, you are going to fill that gap and ensure that hunger stays away until shortly before the next meal of the day.

You might think that just because it is not as big a meal as lunch or dinner, breakfast is less important, but you would be wrong. You are going to function better both physically and mentally if you make sure that you get something inside of you before you leave the house in the morning.

No matter what it is that you eat, you are better off having something than nothing. There are hundreds of low calorie breakfast recipes online too that you can get inspiration from, if you can't come up with your own.

Which breakfast foods should you eat?

Now I am going to tell you what the best foods at breakfast time are, so that you have some ideas of what to include in this meal. This will be extra helpful if you don't already eat it on a regular basis.

Grains, grains, grains
- Whole grains such as granola, cheerios and muesli are incredibly nutritious and good for you, and should definitely play a part in your breakfast planning. They are probably going to be the most healthy thing that you can include in this meal, so therefore they should be the main focal point with other things included around them. Grains are also a good source of fiber which helps to satisfy hunger and keep you feeling full for longer.

Fruit - You should be eating 5 portions of fruit and vegetables every single day, and starting the day with one or two pieces is a great way to ensure that you adhere to this requirement. You can easily grab an apple or banana and eat it at home, or even when you are on your way to work. Furthermore, you can easily use some smaller fruit, or even chop up larger ones and include them on your cereal to improve it's taste. Fruit is highly nutritious and also contains sugar that will give you an energy boost, which of course is needed first thing in the morning. Fruits also contain fiber that will help suppress that hunger for you.

Fruits like grapefruit and watermelon are also incredibly tasty ideas to tuck into at breakfast.

Juices - Fruit juices are very nutritious and have sugar to boost your energy levels. A glass every morning is also another way to get one of your five a day!

Eggs - Eggs are highly versatile and can be eaten hot or cold, and in a number of different ways. They can be eaten on their own or with other foods such as part of a fry up, or in a sandwich. They are high in cholesterol which is why you shouldn't really eat more than a couple a day, but they have a large volume of protein and other nutrients that your body needs.

Cereal bars - Like fruit this is something that can be eaten on the move, so you can take this with you when you leave the house. They are small and compact but full of nutrients.

Coffee - Due to it's caffeine content coffee is synonymous with being a great pick me up. This is the case any time of the day, so consuming it first thing in the morning when you need it most makes sense right?

Yogurt
- Nutritious and tasty, a yogurt is something quick and easy, and also something you can take with you when you leave the house.

Don't worry about the calories in foods and drinks at the breakfast table if you are on a diet, their nutritional content and the fact they will fuel your body and stop you snacking later on, more than compensates for these.
