Garbage disposer are very useful in any kitchen because they can save you the hassle of throwing waste into the trash can which can cause bad odors if not taken out immediately. You can look under your sink and there is likely a screw that is holding the bottom of the disposer together. Removing the screw will allow you to clear any debris in the way. There may also be a reset switch that has popped to stop from causing anymore harm, you can press this to reset it.

To reduce the chance of anything clogging your disposer, try to avoid putting anything too hard down the drain. Also make sure to always use cold water when trying to dispose of things especially oil or fats because in cold water they congeal allow for them to be removed easier. In hot water, the fat will become more soluble and can build up in the disposer.
