Everybody has cravings for a certain type of food every once in a while. Some times you just have to get those salty chips, greasy pizza or the super sweet chocolate bar. What do these cravings mean? Not only does it say something about your body but it also says something about your personality.Alan R. Hirsch, M.D. and the head of the Smell & Taste Research Center in Chicago says, "Cravings definitely have a physical component, but they also give some insight into the type of person you are." Hirsch has studied over 18,000 peoples cravings, food choices and personalities. Here's some insight into your late night need for french fries.
If you're craving salty food:
Your Body: If you need salty foods then you may have a mineral deficiency. Studies have shown that women who eat low calcium diets crave salty foods more than woman who get enough calcium. One possible reason for this is that sodium temporarily increases calcium levels in the blood which tricks your body into thinking that the problem is fixed. You may have a shortage of other minerals too, including: potassium and iron. In a studie of animals researchers found that the lack of these two minerals caused the subjects to devour table salt.
Your Personality: People who crave salty foods go with the flow. The research by Hirsch describes salt lovers as having an, "external locus of control," which means that they beleive that outside forces determine their fate.
If you're craving chocolate:
Your Body: You want chocolate because it makes you happy. It does that because it stimulates the release of serotonin in the body. Hirsch says chocolate is basically an antidepressant. Your body instinctively seeks chocolate when you're "happy chemicals" are running on low and you need a quick fix.
Your Personality: This depends on what type of chocolate your body is longing for.
Dark Chocolate: You're the life of the party, in the mix of the team project and a social butterfly.
Milk Chocolate: You're an introverted, quiet type that likes to read a book alone and go out by yourself in the afternoon.
If you're craving spicy food:
Your Body: When people have trouble cooling down they may crave spicy foods to make them perspire. Some research also suggest that people can become addicted to the rush of spicy food that is associated with spiked blood pressure, accelerated heart rate and ra[id breathing says Tammy Shames, R.D.
Your Personality: People that crave spicy food are perfectionist. They love order, hate wasting time and pay attention to all the details.
If you're craving sweets:
Your Body: Cravings sweets is a lot like craving chocolate, you need to boost your mood. It can also mean you need a boost of energy. Since your body absorbs refined sugars faster than any other type of food it gives you immediate fuel.
Your Personality: Sugar-cravers are hedonistic, with few regrets. They tend to walk on the wildside and like to stand out and feel special.
If you crave sweet and salty together:
Your body: Glucose and sodium are very important for your body to fucntion properly. When you get tired you crave sugar and salt to get your cells energy.
Your personality: These people are loners. They are smart and creative but also private and standoffish.
