What if I don't have the documents to File Back Taxes?
When you go to file back taxes you need a lot of information. The question is: what are you going to do if you are filing for years past and you no longer have the information you need? This is a big problem because you need to have the proper documentation in order to file back taxes. Fortunately, you may not be as bad off as you think. There are ways to get on track even if you feel that you are bogged down and have nowhere to go.
To start, the IRS has records of
your W-2's from the past. This means that you can request a copy from them if
you are in the process of filing back taxes. Do not be afraid to do this
because you don't want the IRS to know what is going on. Remember, they are
going to find out that you were late when you send in your past tax returns. At
this point there is no point in continuing to hide. You need your W-2 to finish
the process. Even if you lost your W-2 there are many ways for you to recover it or have an estimated one created in order to file past due returns.
What about deductions? This is on
you. If you have the proper documents, such as receipts, you can still take
advantage of tax deductions. But if you don't you will have to forgo including
them and move on. There is no way of proving that you actually incurred these
expenses, so they cannot be included on your tax return.
If you don't have the documents to
file back taxes you are definitely adding more work for yourself. But remember,
the IRS can and will help by supplying you with the proper W-2. This is a good
start, and pretty much all that you need to file your return and move on.
