What is Alternative Music?

By Edited Sep 9, 2016 0 0

One of the most popular styles of music out there today, despite those that say its heyday has long since passed, alternative music is still a viable commodity for music industry executives looking to make a quick buck off of the dreams of young, impressionable artists. Alternative rock was formed as an alternative to the mainstream music that was popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Owing a great debt to the punk bands of the 1970s and 80s, alternative rock during the 90s rose to great heights before plummeting in popularity thanks to oversaturation of the market by money hungry record executives. Let’s take a closer look at alternative music and educate the uninitiated.

Alternative rock owes much of its success to the punk rock movement of the late 1970s, which continued into the 80s. However, as new wave began to replace the loud, fast and crude punk rock that had dominated the style many artists became disenchanted and began searching for a new sound. By combining rock and rock sensibility with the sneer of punk rock, alternative rock was born. Of course, the best way to get acquainted with the sound of alternative rock is to listen to it yourself on a website that allows you to descargar canciones gratis and bajar musica gratis MP3.

Rise to Popularity

As alternative rock became more and more popular in the underground music scenes of the East Coast and Pacific Northwest, record executives began to fall all over themselves and each other trying to sign a band that they hoped would be the next Nirvana, who of course became the poster child band for 90s alternative rock. As more and more of these alternative rock bands began to get signed the scene took on much of the same feel of the 80s glam rock and began to feel more like a trend or fad than the cultural movement it started out as.

Oversaturation and Decline

When the cultural movement against the music industry known as alternative rock began to be just another commodity used for monetary gain by the industry bands that had started the movement either took themselves out of the game or became the very thing they sought to destroy. Nirvana ended when Cobain killed himself, Mudhoney stayed respectable by staying off of a major label, while bands like Soundgarden and Pearl Jam sold their integrity to the music industry in exchange for a long career and financial security.

Thankfully, in recent years, there has been a resurgence in alternative rock. Thanks to the internet’s ability to allow bands to bypass the music industry completely, new forms of alternative rock have made their way into the cultural lexicon without having to compromise their artistic integrity, bringing back to original idea of alternative music providing an “alternative” to the mainstream artists that saturate the music industry. To hear some of these new bands that operate outside of the industry’s stranglehold, you can visit a website that allows you to bajar musica gratis MP3 and descargar canciones gratis.
