What is CLA

By Edited Sep 14, 2016 0 1

It is that time of year where you decide you are going to start losing weight/cutting fat and start working out again.  With all the fat loss supplements out there trying to find the best one for you can often be easier done than before.  The supplement is called Conjugated linoleic acid.  Conjugated what?!?!  I am not putting no acid in my body is what you might be saying.  Often referred to as CLA, it is an overlooked fat-los supplement that became a popular in bodybuilding in the early 90’s that has been proven in numerous studies to significantly help reduce unwanted body fat and increase muscle mass.  CLA has become a common need amongst athletes and those who are self-conscious about their weight because of the research behind it of translating into fat loss and muscle gain.

THE SCIENCE

Conjugated linoleic acid is an omega-6 polyunsaturated that is natural found in your meat and dairy products.  Your average daily diet will supply you with anywhere from 20-175 mg of CLA a day.  CLA has the ability to regulate your body’s metabolism of fat through what they call lipoprotein lipase.  Your body can use free fatty acids as another fuel source from the catabolism of fat cells caused by CLA.  The more free fatty acids you have in your blood during exercise, the more fat you can burn!  In other words, CLA will block fat uptake and increase the rate of burning fat.

There are also other studies being done to show that Conjugated linoleic acid has anti-carcinogenic properties (lung, breast, skin, prostate, etc…), fights heart disease, arthrosclerosis, boosts your immune system, and acts as an anti-inflammatory.   It is suggested to take a dose of CLA 3 times daily with your meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) of anywhere from 3 to 6 grams a day, which is also 3,000 to 6,000 mg.  You will get your best results when combined with a steady exercise routine and healthy diet.

WHERE TO BUY AND COST

CLA can be found on every shelf in every supplement store you can think of.  Most notably GNC, Vitamin World, and Vitamin Shoppe are some of the places you might to look in.  There are many different kinds of brands with many different doses.  You have to find out what works best for you.  Most people will not see results from taking CLA until after 4 to 6 weeks of routinely taking it three times a day with meals.  It is important to take CLA religiously to have your body get used to the effects it has on your body.

You will find bottles with anywhere from 500 mg to 1500 mg with a pill count of anywhere from 60 capsules to 500 capsules.  Make sure you check the dosage.  Usually lower milligram counts are going to require you to take more capsules with each meal.  It is best to check the number of servings available in each bottle to see how long it will last you.  Hopefully, this article has provided you with some insight on an overlooked fat loss product that is fairly inexpensive ($10 to $50 dependant on serving size and brand).

PERSONAL NOTE

I have personally used CLA while cutting weight for a body transformation competition and the results were great.  It took about a month to see the fat loss results especially in my abdominal region and getting rid of those love handles.  I was able to cut down from 220 lbs. to 199 in 12 weeks with the combination of just CLA, diet, and exercise.  It was well worth it!  Keep working hard and have diet, exercise, and supplementation become a creature of habit!

I agree that CLA sounds more healthy than: Conjugated linoleic acid
