What is Cabinet Refacing?

Cabinet refacing is an excellent way to give your kitchen a completely new look without having to tear down the walls. If your kitchen is looking worn or outdated, consider refacing your cabinets. It can be a relatively inexpensive process and a really fun home improvement project.

The Basics
Cabinet refacing involves either refinishing or replacing your cabinet fronts. It avoids having to replace the cabinet box structure completely and can give your entire kitchen a brand new look.

Preparing the Existing Cabinet Box Frame
Whether you're giving your old cabinet fronts a new finish or you're replacing them completely, you must remove them so that you can sand down and prepare the existing cabinet box frame. Refinish the frame so that it matches the color and style of the new redone/replaced cabinet doors and drawer fronts. If you're putting in new hinges, be sure to fill in the holes made by the old hinges, as the bolts of the new hinges might not line up exactly with the old one.

Refinishing Existing Fronts

Make sure to sand down the doors and drawer fronts completely. Start with rough grade sand paper and slowly work your way down to the finest grade. When you start applying varnish or stain coats, sand them down with fine sandpaper to get rid of all the bumps and imperfections before adding on the next layer. The result should be a smooth, professional-grade new cabinet façade.

Getting New Cabinet Fronts
