What is Involved in Laser Spider Vein Removal?

By | Nov 10, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 1

For most people, spider veins present no medical complications, although many people feel self-conscious by the presence of these unsightly surface veins. While there are various treatments and remedies to consider, laser spider vein removal or Endovenous laser treatment is one of the most popular options.

It is always helpful to have a clear understanding of what to expect when you undergo this process. First of all, you will be evaluated to see if you are a candidate for this procedure. Varicose vein laser removal is not an option for all varicose veins and is only suitable for the smaller spider veins. The procedure only takes a few minutes and can be completed in your doctor's office or clinic.

While laser treatment for spider veins can be uncomfortable due to the heat, the procedure is not especially painful. Cooling gels may be applied to counteract the effects of the heat from the laser and if necessary, your doctor may apply a local anesthetic. Keep in mind, it may take several treatments for the spider veins, which are absorbed by the body, to disappear completely. These treatments can be spaced several weeks apart and many patients see results in as few as two to three treatments.

This process for removing spider veins on legs is truly remarkable. Often, a hand held laser is targeted at the spider vein and the heat causes the blood to clot, which is then absorbed by the body. Basically, what is happening, is the destruction of the small spider vein over the course of treatments.

One of the best advantages of this type treatment is that you can resume normal activities immediately, although you may have a reddish patch at the treatment site. You may also experience minimal itching or burning but this is normal and should disappear within a day or two.

It is important to note that this type of procedure in most cases is considered cosmetic and is usually not covered by most insurance plans or Medicare. It is a good idea to compare prices and seek out referrals prior to having this treatment on your spider veins. However, if you have spider veins that are causing you embarrassment or discomfort, you may want to consider laser spider vein removal no matter what the cost may be. It is a personal preference.
