What is Reflexology Massage?

By | May 8, 2010 | 1 Comments | Rating: 0

Reflexology massage is an alternative therapeutic treatment which works on the basis of applying pressure to the right reflex points can in turn correct problems associated with correlating body parts and organs. For instance, a point on the arch of the foot may correspond with liver function. As such, when pressure is applied to the reflex point on the foot, this will improve the liver functioning.

During a reflexology massage therapy, the therapist will apply acupressure and various massage techniques to certain zones of the ears, hands (known as hand reflexology massage) and feet (known as foot reflexology massage). Often the reflexology massage therapist will use tools such as: reflexology gloves - to massage the palms; reflexology mats - for use in meditation and yoga; reflexology socks - a reflexology foot chart printed on a sock; and reflexology kits.

History

Reflexology massages are an ancient art. The precise date of origination is unknown, but there is evidence that it was a common healing treatment practiced 5,000 years ago in ancient Asian and Middle Eastern cultures. Reflexology is making a comeback in recent times and has been incorporated into employee health programs.

Benefits

The major benefits of a reflexology massage are:

  • Reflexology massage can relieve pain and stiffness caused by too much exercising
  • It can help prevent and cure many symptoms such as migraines, circulatory and digestive issues, sinus problems and more.
  • It can boost the blood circulation system in the body.

Reflexology Massage Techniques

There are various techniques you can use to relax the muscles in your body or heal an affected internal organ. Slide and Press is a very common reflexology technique. Place the thumbs on the edge of the feet on opposite sides and slide it upwards by applying pressure. After sliding upwards for five minutes, slide the thumb downwards. Keep switching the position every five minutes. Another technique involves rotating the big toe to the left and right. Hold and switch the direction every five seconds. Pressing the big toe is also considered to be an effective reflexology massage technique.

Reflexology massage treatments usually last between 30 and 60 minutes. Treatments can be performed as frequently as necessary, but most people choose to visit a reflexologist every two weeks for optimal health benefits.
