What is Reggaeton Music?

By Edited Nov 24, 2016 0 0

There is a new form of Spanish language music that is sweeping popular music. Known as reggaeton music, it has its origins in the afro-Caribbean sounds that spring from Cuba and Puerto Rico. Though reggaeton music is relatively new to the mainstream music world, having only achieved true popularity beginning in about 2004, this style of spicy, latin inspired Spanish language music has been slowing brewing beneath the surface of popular music for a number of years. For the uninitiated, let’s take a look at the origins of reggaeton music, some of the most popular artists playing the style today and other aspects of this very cool style of Spanish language music.

Origins

Reggeaton music has its origins in the same places that afro-cuban and afro-Caribbean music does. Heavily influenced by the reggae and rock steady island styles of music that were fostered in Jamaica, reggaeton also mixes in a heavy dose of the latin inspired sound that permeates afro-cuban music. With this healthy mix of interesting styles, reggaeton has quickly become one of the most interesting new forms of Spanish language music. For those that are curious, simply search the internet to find a website where you can descargar musica free. There are many sites that will let you listen to and descargar music gratuita in Spanish.

The Early Days

While reggaeton really first exploded in the mid 1980s, it didn’t achieve the level of mainstream popularity that is has today until just a few years ago. The early days of reggaeton was much like the early days of punk rock or blues. Bands played the style in their local area and made quite an impression, but did not do much outside of their local area in terms of selling music or getting the style out there. Instead, they fostered a feverishly loyal local fan base that eventually propelled the style to mainstream popularity.

Rise to Popularity

Finally, after years of the reggaeton style flying under the radar, it exploded onto the mainstream music scene in about 2004. This was partially due to the influx of Spanish language artists gaining popularity in mainstream American and European music. Artists such as Shakira and Christina Aguilera, Rick Martin and Enrique Inglesias made Spanish music a viable commodity in mainstream music, opening the door for many of the reggaeton artists that are popular today to get their name out there.

Popular Artists

One of the most popular reggaeton artists out there today is named Don Omar. Also known as El Rey, or “The Rey”, Omar has achieved a level of popularity that is incredibly difficult to achieve in mainstream music when you are a Spanish speaking artist. Thanks to his clever mix of Spanish and English in his music, you can find much of his work available for download on music sites that allows you to descargar music free. Many of the reggaeton artists that are popular today owe much to Omar, since if it were not for him they may never have gotten popular enough to have their music featured on website that allow you to descargar musica gratuita.
