The sinuses are air cavities located in the bones of your head. They are connected to the nose and the nasal passages. Sinus pressure, also known as nasal or sinus congestion, may not sound like something that causes much suffering. But only people who go through it have the right idea about how much discomfort and trouble it can cause.


Common Causes

  1. Infections – Infected sinuses may be the result of certain kinds of bacteria or viruses. These bacteria or viruses may cause the sinuses to swell which may start producing excessive mucus and maybe even pus.
  2. Catching a Flu or Cold – These also cause swelling of the sinuses which leads to blockage and congestion.
  3. Allergies – Certain allergies, such as reactions to dust, animal fur, pollution, flower pollen, etc, can irritate the membranes found in our nasal passages. This irritation leads to nasal congestion.

All three situations make it harder for the person to breathe through the nose and may lead to severe headaches. Breathing becomes difficult because of the excess production of mucus in the nasal passages. Even though many over the counter nasal sprays are readily available for treating such congestion, natural treatments for sinus pressure are the easiest with no side effects.


Natural Treatments

If you suffer from sinus pressure, the first thing to keep in mind would be to avoid dry air until the nasal passage has been cleared. This is because dry air will only worsen the condition and may cause further irritation or inflammation. To avoid dryness of the nasal passage, you can resort to any of the following methods:

  • Make sure to breathe in steam for at least 15 minutes at a time.
  • Take hot showers so that the bathroom gets steamy.
  • Go for long swims, but make sure that the water that you choose to swim in is chlorine free. This is because chlorine can irritate the sinuses.
  • Sometimes congestion is caused at night when you go to bed. This is because laying down straight causes the congestion in the nasal passages to worsen. You can try sleeping on 2 pillows to keep your head propped up for better breathing in such cases.
  • Saline water sprayed into the nose keeps it from drying up.
  • Drinking a lot of water will also help because it will reduce the thickness of the mucus. Even fluids other than water will help reduce congestion.
  • Keep your face warm and moist. This will make sure that the nasal passages also stay moist and open up quickly. You can do this by getting a small sized towel and soaking it in warm water before covering your face with it for a few minutes.

These natural treatments are easy and will save the money of buying nasal sprays and medications for congestion. However, some people may not find enough time to just sit down with a hot towel on their face, or to go swimming or relax in steam baths. In such cases, it is more convenient to just buy decongestant sprays or pills from any nearby shop. Decongestants may not be suitable for small children though.

Pain killers may also be purchased and used by people who suffer from headaches due to sinus pressures. However, constant use of medication and painkillers is never good for health so it is advised that you try out the natural treatments first before resorting to medications.
