What is a Cold Sore?

By | Jan 15, 2010 | 0 Comments | Rating: 0

Yes, a cold core is a version of herpes. No, getting a cold sore does not necessarily mean someone has genital herpes or has come into contact with genital herpes. Although both forms of the herpes virus, chicken pox is also a form of the herpes virus, which does not suggest sexual promiscuity, and neither, then, does a cold sore.

What's the Difference?

The herpes virus is divided into two types. Type one generally attacks body tissue above the waist like the lips in the case of cold sores and the stomach and back in the case of chicken pox, while type two attacks below the waistline in the case of genital herpes.

Why Do People Get Cold Sores?

Because the initial infection doesn't present itself as a cold sore, most people aren't even aware they've come in contact with the virus. Most often, the virus is contracted before seven years of age, which makes pinpointing the how and why more difficult.

The only way to contract the virus – type one or type two – is by having contact with someone who has the infection by way of the infected area. The most likely way to catch type one herpes is to share a utensil or straw with someone who has it.

How Can You Tell What is a Cold Sore or What is a Canker Sore?

The easiest way to tell what is a cold sore is cold sores are mostly found on the lips or the skin immediately around the lips. In some cases, cold sores can appear on the chin, nostrils or fingers. Canker sores – which are not contagious – appear inside the mouth where cold sores are rarely found.

Important Reminders

While it may be hard to tell what is a cold sore at first glance, it's better to be safe than sorry, so avoid sharing food or drinks from the same glass or utensil with someone who has something on their lip that looks like it may be a cold sore.

Once you get a cold sore, the first thing most want to know is how to cure a cold sore. There are a variety of medicines and natural remedies that are available. You should first visit your doctor to make sure that you do have a cold sore and that it is not something more serious.
