What is the Birthstone for May?

The birthstone for May is the emerald but according to other sources at least fifteen different birthstones for May exist.  In Egypt they were known to engrave emeralds with the foliage symbol to represent eternal youth. In many cases, the ancient Egyptians bury the emeralds with the dead.  In ancient Rome, the emerald became associated with rebirth and fertility.  There are some people who feel that by wearing this gem it will bring them wisdom, patience, and growth.  Because people feel the emerald is these things, giving an emerald for an anniversary, a birthday gift for someone special, or any special occasion, is a symbolic gift of fidelity and love.  It was also a very popular gem used in making Victorian jewelry and was one of Cleopatra’s favorite gems.  She often wore emerald jewelry that was very lavish.

All the above are birthstones for May because there are two Zodiac signs that span part of May.  They are a Sun/Star, Talismanic, or Planetary stones for the Taurus or Gemini Zodiac sign.  For the real calendar month of May, the birthstones are the sapphire, carnelian, agate, and of course the emerald.  The word “emerald” comes from a Greek word called “Smaragdos” which translates to “green stone.”  It is one of the most valuable gemstones in the world because of its weight.  In addition to it being May’s birthstone it is also the stone for the twentieth, thirty-fifth, and fifty-fifth wedding anniversary jewelry.  

Type of Mineral and Where They Are Found

The birthstone for May is a member of the beryl mineral family and the green crystals slowly grow in the metamorphic rocks.  The size of the rock restricts just how big they become, which makes it rare to find a large emerald and if one is found it is quite expensive.  The emerald is usually durable and hard. However, when it is taken out of the rocks it becomes protected from the blows.  This is because it is susceptible to breakage because of the inclusions that are found inside them.  The emerald is also found in Zimbabwe, Pakistan, Nigeria, Russia, Madagascar, Brazil, and Afghanistan.  The Muzio mine in Colombia is the source to find prized emerald specimens and has been since the sixteenth century.  During the mining process,  the emerald becomes graded according to its shape, clarity, and color.

The birthstone for May is also considered to having healing properties to help enhance your mental capabilities and for health problems that it is associated with the spine, headaches, fertility, and your eyes.  The emerald is also associated with friendship, loyalty, and faithfulness.  The traditional metaphysical properties for this gemstone are faith, clairvoyance, and memory.  It is also the birthstone for the Zodiac sign Taurus, which covers the birth dates from April 11th to May 20th.
