What is the Glycemic Index and Why is It Important?

By Edited Jun 8, 2016 0 0

I am sure you have heard of a glycemic index before but never really understood what it is or stood for. A glycemic index at its base is a simple form of measuring of carbohydrates. Since not all carbohydrtes are made equal, they will do different things to our blood levels. That is why glycemix index charts are used to gather data and tell us what are good carbohydrates and bad carbohydrates.

You see, bad carbohydatres raise our insulin and makes other parts of our body fluctuate oddily. In fact, it is actually hard-pressed action of consuming these bad carbohydrates and converting them into energy at all. Most of the time, they get converted just into fat.

Good carbohydrates on the other hand are very much different from their bad cousins! These will actually convert into energy, make you feel more full (Due to high fiber) and have the necessary phynutrients you need for long-term health.

Also good carbohydrates will help you other parts of your body (hint hint, tip for weight loss). So it is really important to make a stand and make these part of your life.

In terms of the actual glycemic index chart, you want what is known as Low-GI foods. In other words, good carbohydrates. These are the foods that do very little in terms of making your body fluctuate to all sorts of weird levels.

By doing this, you will remain at a much healthier status in life.

Some Benefits of Low-GI (Glycemic Index) Diets

  • Low GI diets help people lose and manage weight
  • Low GI diets increase the body's sensitivity to insulin
  • Low GI carbs improve diabetes management
  • Low GI carbs reduce the risk of heart disease
  • Low GI carbs improve blood cholesterol levels
  • Low GI carbs can help you manage the symptoms of PCOS
  • Low GI carbs reduce hunger and keep you fuller for longer
  • Low GI carbs prolong physical endurance
  • High GI carbs help re-fuel carbohydrate stores after exercise

As you can see, there is a lot of benefits to a glycemic index and their charts. And this, at the end of the day, is very easy to follow (Very simple diet.) versus super complicated diets or the diets that offer you instructions to do weird rituals and cleanses.

If you're looking, and I mean seriously looking, for long-term health than changing your lifestyle to a more low glycemic index chart friendly way, is the route you want to go. You will feel great, burn off more fat, have more energy and perhaps most importantly... a much longer life!
