Know the Basics

So many professional wedding photographers can overcharge and leave brides and bridegrooms penniless. If photography is your passion, you could definitley make a living from it.

If you are charging less for something like this, then you will definitely get more work, but you have to prove that you can do the job because nobody wants to find images of their big day which are out of focus and poor in quality. The first thing you have to look into, is your technique. You have to start by learning the tricks of the trade because the camera is not going to do the work for you.

Top 10 Tips for Any Wedding Photographer

  • Consult with the bride and bridegroom beforehand and find out from them what is actually on their list. Who do they want their photos taken with? What kind of setting are they looking for? They may want a change of clothes.
  • Be creative, and by that it means looking out for symbols and objects that symbolize the big day. The rings entwined together or just the hands of the couple will make a great shot. Use your imagination.
  • You won't have time to change lenses between shots so it is definitely recommended that you get two cameras which are all set up and ready to go. This way will be prepared for anything.
  • If you are just starting out, then don't take on anything bigger than you think you can handle. It would be a good thing to start small. Volunteering by helping someone else is a good way to learn the ropes.
  • You have to be on your toes because this is almost like action photography. Before you know it, the couple will have walked down the aisle and that would be it, so make sure there are no distractions and you are concentrating 100%.
  • Backgrounds are very important so this is another aspect to focus on. The problem here is that the shots are usually filled with people. Find an uncluttered area which, preferably in a shady area.

This book focuses on practice and how to go about it. This is what makes a good photographer, but it is important that you take the proper steps in order to get there.
  • Diffused lighting - the challenge is dealing with lighting issues in churches which is low. See if you can bounce the flash off diffused light because that really works well. Sometimes you won't be allowed to use a flash in the church. In a case like this, a wide aperture can be used. You can also try increasing the ISO.
  • Use different angles to add perspective into your shots. You will find that getting creative with different angles as well as getting down low and shooting from high positions when it comes time for the reception can really look good. Candid shots are always appealing.
  • Speaking of candid, this is often difficult to achieve, but if you have just taken a formal shot and notice that people are starting to relax, then just keep on shooting in continuous mode and they won't even realize what is happening. People often become negative about the weather, but if it begins to drizzle, you will get a couple of amazing shots of the couuple running together in the rain.
  • Be ready for anything. Basically this means anything, but the most important thing to remember here is to have your equipment in place. For example, a bad photographer will leave his memory card at home.

This is something you just can't think of doing. Of course, you also have to be ready for all sorts of weather. You may have planned for a couple of gorgeous beach shots, but when the weather turns bad then you quickly have to start thinking about an alternative plan. Have a backup plan, but make sure you consult with the happy couple as well. It's best to head off to the scene beforehand so you know what to expect.

Be Prepared!

Take your camera with you and be prepared for anything because you never know when you may stroll across a nice opportunity to extend your portfolio and take a couple of shots of a beach wedding. You may find a wedding reception in an open area like at a park or an open field. This is where it is great to start snapping away.

I was in Florence a couple of years ago, shooting away at the lovely view, when suddenly I hear beautiful music and see violins playing. Of course, in the distance, strolling along come bride and bridegroom. Tourists started to snap away. Something like this is the perfect opportunity just to practice your shooting skills, running alongside the couple.

You may be thinking that it is rude to intrude like this. Believe me, if they wanted privacy, they would have got that. There are some couples that love to be admired - and why not, it is their big day!
