What's The Best Programmable Thermostat?

By Edited Jun 18, 2015 0 1

Everybody knows, heating and cooling is one of your greatest expenses with a home...

...and it also uses a lot of energy!  There is a big push these days due to environmental reasons for households to attempt to conserve thier power usage in any way that they can, and your HVAC system is a great place to start.  Plus, has the potential to save you a ton of money over the course of a year!  According to the United States' engery conservation website, energy.gov, you can save 5%-15% off your energy bill per year by switching to a programmable thermostat.  That's no chump change.  [1]

Consider this:  If your electric bill was an average of 200 a month, and you saved 10% per year, that would add up to a savings of $240.00 over the course of a year.  Many people would see even more savings, depending on their energy consumption levels.

Plus, a programmable thermostat is so "green"

Green energy sources are a big thing these days.  Top political pundits and litigators are all pushing hard, trying to find ways to create "green power."  While you may not be a scientist or a powerful politician, you can make a difference to the environment by personally limiting your household's power consumption.

There are really 2 ways to decrease your households' energy usage when it comes to heating and cooling:

1. You deal with the temperature either being hotter or cooler than you would like it to be by manually turning up or down to stop it from running

2. You can install a programmable thermostat.

What is a programmable thermostat anyways?

and why you might want one in your home....

A programmable thermostat is a device that you install in your home in place of a traditional thermostat.  It is always digital, and often has a touch screen that goes with it.  Many of these high-tech thermostats have smart phone apps that you can download to your phone that allow you to manage the device and adjust the temperature settings in your home when you are on the go, out of the house.  How convenient is that?

Some of the higher-end thermostats actually learn and adapt to your temperature setting patterns, and it becomes largely automatic.  A programmable temperature regulator can be a techie's dream, because it is fun, and it saves you time and money.  And they look super cool, too.

So, what is the best programmable thermostat?

I'm glad to see the Honeywell stats on this page. I've been in and out of HVAC since 1995, and currently work emergency repair calls only. I'm pretty unlikely to give out a lot of "endorsements," but the Honeywell digital t-stats really are superior in my mind.

Thing about all these t-stats is, they can sometimes be VERY VERY complicated to program. It isn't exactly all common sense and simple. Sometimes it takes a guy who's been doing this stuff an hour or so reading the manual to figure out how to set up the thermostat. Especially it can be difficult if the home owner has very expensive and very high efficiency systems in their homes.

Once I spent 3 hours trying to program a top of the line Carrier thermostat for a homeowner who had 18 SEER equipment. I'd never seen the kind of thermostat before, and the homeowner wouldn't leave me alone, he was forever, "Oh let's try this!"

Another great thing about these digital thermostats is they don't have any mercury in them. In this modern world we're all already being exposed to more toxins than ever before, and mercury is one of the major ones of them. CHEERS!
