What's the Best Internet Service Provider for Downloading?

By Edited Feb 13, 2014 0 0

Choosing an Internet service provider can be a nightmare. In the UK, ISPs are a hugely competitive market, and providers often offer great deals to get new customers. However, it is important that you get the right ISP for your needs. If you spend most of your time on the Internet downloading, which means getting films or pictures from the net or playing online games, you need to make sure that you have the best ISP for downloading that you can get.

In today's economy, we're all looking to save money, and downloading can run up huge Internet bills if you're not careful. SO if you're looking to get a new provider, or to switch providers, and you use the internet heavily for downloading, here's what you need to know before you make your decision...

Fair Usage and Set Download Limits...

Before choosing an ISP you need to be aware of the restrictions that providers often put on downloading. Some ISPs use set download limits to cap how much you can download in a month. These limits vary by company, and if you overstep your limit you may find yourself with some premium charges on your bill (or with your Internet service cut off). Many companies nowadays offer “unlimited” packages.

However, it's important to note that a lot of these packages are not actually unlimited as they tend to have fair usage policies. A fair usage policy basically says that you can use an average amount of downloading data, but if you use an unexpectedly high amount, the ISP has the right to do one of several things.

Using more than your fair share of downloading can result in you automatically getting upgraded to a more expensive package, having your download speeds throttled (slowed down considerably for the rest of the month), or even having your contract terminated if you repeatedly go above the fair usage limit. When signing a contract make sure that you read it carefully to ensure that the package is actually unlimited if that's what you're looking for.

The Right ISP...

Shopping around and reading contract details thoroughly are what will net you the best deal. Sky's Sky Unlimited package is one of only a very few deals on the UK market that really is as unlimited as it says it is. There is no downloading limit and no fair usage policy either. However, Sky's services can be a little slow for some people, and they don't have the fastest download speeds on the market. If you want to go for a company that has faster speeds, you will have to compromise a little.

O2 and BE Broadband, for example, have decent speeds and have specially designed packages for heavy Internet users. They do have fair usage policies and/or downloading limits though. However, remember that fair usage policies are generally implemented to stop people running big multiple downloads around the clock, so if you're not permanently running downloads there's a good chance that the policy won't really affect you.
