More and more people are talking about it, more and more people are getting great results with it, so what is the paleo diet?
The paleo diet, in simple terms, is a modern nutritional plan based on the ancient diet of wild plants and animals that our species consumed for millions of years during the Paleolithic era. This era ended around 10,000 years ago with the development of agriculture.
Biologically, we are probably very similar to the people who lived during the Paleolithic era and therefore created to eat the same kinds of food they were eating at that time, mainly meat, fish, seafood, vegetables and fruits.
But much have changed since then in the way we eat and drink. Today, the average living person in the western world consume way to much grains, dairy products, saturated fats, processed foods and refined sugars. And because of that suffers from health problems such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and different types of allergies.
With that said, the paleo diet says that our nutritional needs are the same as the people living during the stone age, and our genes are adapted to a world where our foods should be fished, hunted or picked in the wild.
So why should you eat the paleo diet and what are the benefits with it?
The paleo diet is high in volume, water rich, time consuming to eat, gives saturation and is relatively low in energy. With a high intake of meat, fish and seafood, which are high in protein, the satiating effect will increase even further. This will give you satisfaction before you’ve eaten more calories than you actually need, unlike most other foods we put into our body today.
Because of this, the paleo diet is expected to contribute to a desirable body weight, good body values, (ph, blood pressure etc.) and prevent complications of diabetes.
What can you eat and drink with the paleo diet?
Lean meat, fish, seafood, game, vegetables, root vegetables, fruits (fresh and dried), eggs, nuts, berries, wine (one glass a day) and regular water.
What type of foods and drinks should you avoid?
All types of dairy products, grains (wheat, oats, rice etc.), beans, sugar (candy, soda, juice), salt (seasoning with salt), butter, margarine, oil (other than canola and olive oil) processed foods, beer and soda water.
Have you tried the paleo diet? Do you want to try it? If you’ve tried it, what are your thoughts on it?
