Wheelchair Stair Lift Choices

By Edited Jun 15, 2015 0 0

A stair lift is a great choice for people to be able to get up and down the stairs with great ease. It will allow people to regain their independence. However a chair lift is not suitable for people who can not get themselves in and out of the chair on their own. If a person uses a wheelchair the perfect solution would be to install a wheelchair stair lift.

There are two types of the conventional chair stair lift; one that goes up and down and the type that follows the curves of the stairwell. The chairs are on a track system which is operated by an AC or DC unit. This is then connected to your main power source or powered by a battery.

If you are a wheelchair user you will find that there are also two types of stair lifts that are available to you.

  • Vertical Wheelchair Stair Lift
  • Inclined Wheelchair Stair Lift

Vertical Wheelchair Stair Lift

The vertical model is basically an elevator style lift. This is suitable for larger homes where you have the space to facilitate the installation of an elevator unit. The space needs to be adequate enough so that you can easily maneuver a wheelchair inside and have easy entry and exit access. The vertical wheelchair stair lift can be out of the question for many people because it is really expensive to install.

Inclined Wheelchair Stair Lift

The inclined model is similar to the conventional type of stair lift. It travels up and down the stairs in the same way as a chair does. However in order to accommodate a wheelchair the staircase has to be wide enough. Most conventional staircases are not so wide so this may not be an option for a lot of households unless you know that there is the space to widen the stairwell. Another thing that has to be taken into account is the strength of the walls. Extra brackets would need to be attached to the walls in order to support the weight of both the stairwell platform and then the wheelchair itself.

The best thing to do if you are interested in getting a wheelchair stair lift installed in your home, is to get in contact with a specialist who makes it their business to custom fit these sorts of lifts. It is a good idea to set up an appointment so that a consultant can make an assessment of your home and let you know what your options are.

Getting a wheelchair stair lift for your home will be a massive investment but if you choose this solution, you will be able to gain greater freedom within in your home.
