As a New York paramedic, I have always enjoyed using a stethoscope cover with my stethoscope. There are many reasons for this, and I'll be glad to explain them. For one, I come in contact with a lot of nasty things on the job, including blood, vomit, urine and other gross stuff that I don't want to get into too many details about. These fluids have an uncanny way of splattering exactly where I don't want them to. There's not much I can do about it, other than be proactive in protecting myself and my equipment.

My stethoscope cover adds a little bit of a barrier between my scope and the outside to help keep the tubing clean. It is worth noting that using a scope cover as a barrier is not the best source of protection, because most stethoscope covers are made of cloth and they are not waterproof. Because of this, they will not provide any type of reliable protection from liquid biohazard materials. Despite the limited protection from bodily fluids, my scope cover does do a great job of protecting my stethoscope from pen marks. Pen marks can be very difficult to clean off of any type of plastic or vinyl, especially tubing, which means that it's really best to avoid them all together. Bear in mind that once the tubing is marked, the ink can be nearly impossible to remove.

I don't use cheap stethoscopes; I have a Littman Classic and I love it. There are many brands of stethoscope and many different quality levels, but for me, my Littman works great. Because I have invested a fairly decent amount of money in my scope, it only makes sense to protect it as much as possible. I may not wear nursing scrubs or a nurse uniform, but I definitely believe in getting my Littman dressed before I go out on the job. A stethoscope cover is an excellent way to provide my scope with the protection that it needs to avoid getting trashed while I'm at work.

It's also worth noting that using a scope cover prevents my scope tubing from pulling at my hair. Even though I keep my hair up, tubing can get caught in the fine hairs around the nape of my neck and pull. A scope cover will discourage any sticking or pulling, making wearing a stethoscope around my neck a little bit more comfortable.

My uniform is dull and boring; stethoscope covers allow me to lighten the uniform up a bit, and allow my personality to shine through. It can also be a source of comfort to a small child who would really prefer to be anywhere else but in the back of my ambulance. They can also make a great conversation piece for patients who are nervous or uneasy- especially the sport themed stethoscope covers. Just be careful where you wear certain teams or you might be attacked by your patients! Ok, you probably won't be attacked, but you will almost certainly have to listen to a wry comment or two before the end of your shift.

I won't lie- I collect stethoscope covers like some nurses collect scrubs or like girl scouts collect badges. The more I have, the happier I am. My husband teases me about my scope cover collection, but I don't care. I don't spend a whole lot of money on myself, but this is one of the few things that I truly enjoy investing in. I have purchased many of these covers from a variety of different uniform supply stores. Usually, I am disappointed with the quality of the covers, because they tend to fall apart on me after just a few uses. I really hate the covers that go all the way up the stethoscope until they touch my chin. Considering the things that my scope and cover come in contact with on a daily basis, the last thing I want is for my dirty cover to touch my face while I am working. Yuk!

I finally found a place to buy stethoscope covers that don't have this annoying ride-up problem, and I have to say, these are some of the best covers I've ever used (and believe me, I've tried many of them). These covers are called Scope Cozys and they come in so many cool fabric patterns and colors; there is something for just about everyone. These stylish and unique stethoscope covers come with a matching inner liner, which I think is really cool. They also have velcro to help keep them from riding up or slipping down when you don't want them to. I have only ordered two different covers from this place, but both covers have come with a cute matching tie to help keep it rolled up and out of the way when it is being stored until later use. That is so cool! I keep my covers rolled up in my dresser when I'm not using them- the tie makes it easy to keep them rolled up and out of the way. Why didn't someone think of this sooner? It's so cool!

In case you're wondering, I bought the NY Giants stethoscope cover (of course), and I bought the pink butterflies stethoscope cover, too. This site also offer FREE SHIPPING on every cover that I buy, which helps save me money. Paying a little bit more for a high quality stethoscope cover can definitely save you money in the long run, and besides, with the free shipping, the cost really does balance itself out.

My best friend is a registered nurse. That's funny, because there is a long standing (but humorous) rivalry between nurses and paramedics. I think that these covers make gifts for nurses and could even be used in hospital raffles to help motivate some of the health care providers that work there. There are so many different covers to choose from, there are even stethoscope covers for men. I have never seen a uniform company that caters to the male healthcare population before. I told my best friend that for her next birthday, I'll let her choose the one she wants and I'll get it for her to help enhance her uniform scrubs. After all, everyone knows that nurses don't usually do a whole lot to get their uniforms dirty. Just kidding!
