Which Carpet Cleaner Works the Best to Remove Stains
Carpet is one of the hardest things in a home to keep clean. Home owners struggle with stains and often wonder which carpet cleaner works the best to remove common stains. People spend hundreds of dollars to have their carpets cleaned and high prices for carpert stain removers that never seem to work all that great. So for my daughters science project we put 4 carpet stain removers to the test to see which one would work the best. The carpet stain removers we chose to test to see which would work best to remove stains were:
1) Oxi Clean
2) Odor Eaters- a professional carpet cleaner highly recommended by the flooring place who donated the carpet to us.
3) A homemade natural carpet cleaner
and
4) Dawn dishwashing soap
We took stain resistant carpet cut it into 16 equal squares and created 4 types of stains for each product to clean. We decided to go with the most common carpet stains:
1) Coffee
2) Kool Aid
3) Dirt/ Mud
4) Ketchup
We wanted to see how well each of the carpet cleaners worked to remove each type of stain. So we lined up the carpet so it looked something like this:

We applied the products and let them soak in for about an hour.
We figured that the professional carpet cleaner would do the best and figured that Oxi Clean would also do quite well. After the hour was up we used 16 different rags to clean the stains so that one product would not interfere with the other. We gave each carpet cleaner a fair chance and scrubbed until we felt like it had done its best, all over 30 seconds of really trying to scrub the stain out.
The Results of Which Product Worked Best to Remove Stains:
Our results were quite surprising!
4th Place- Odor Eaters Professional Carpet Cleaner- Surprisingly, this product did not work well at all to remove the carpet stains. We thought that it would work the best to remove the carpet stains but it ended up not removing any of the carpet stains.
3rd Place- Homemade Natural Carpet Cleaner-This product also did not work very well to remove the carpet stains. It only removed one out of the four stains which was Kool Aid. However, it did a better overall job than the professional carpet cleaner in that the stains were not as prominent, even though they were still quite visible!
2nd Place-Oxi Clean- Oxi Clean worked the second best to remove the carpet stains. It removed 2 stains completely: Ketchup and Kool Aid. Oxi Clean also did a fair job of removing the other two stains however they were still visible and not completely removed!
1st Place- Dawn Dishwashing Soap- This product worked the best to remove all of the stains! This was quite a surprise, good old $1.00 Dawn Dishwashing Soap! It completely took out three of the four stains and almost entirely took out the fourth: Coffee! Coffee was actually the hardest stain to remove overall!
All those years of spending hundreds of dollars on expensive carpet cleaning products and it turns out the most unlikely product ends up getting the job done!

This is great! I love to know what kinda of value I will be getting from a product before I buy it. With 6 kids we get quite a few spills everyday. This will really help me in cleaning the carpets!
It has helped me a ton. Now Dawn is all we use, and it actually works! For less than $1.00- you cant beat that! :)
Great article on removing stains from carpets.
WOW! Who would have thought Dawn would be the winner?
